Wherever you are the UK, you can help us make history and beat Jeremy Hunt and the Conservatives in
#GodalmingandAsh
.
We need your support if we are going to get the job done!
Let’s turn the ‘Portillo moment’ into the ‘Hunt Moment’.
This was the letter that
@Jeremy_Hunt
wrote to the then sec of state expressing his opposition to fracking here in
#Waverley
. Tonight, now Chancellor, he votes against a ban. What more can I say? How many more times do we need to see that what he says & how he votes are at odds?
I am a councillor in a comparatively wealthy area, but deprivation that exists surrounded by that wealth. And it’s not ‘Surrey’ poverty - it’s real poverty by any measure. Any chance you might explain your vote tonight to your constituents
@Jeremy_Hunt
?
It my honour and privilege to announce that I have been selected as the🔶
@LibDems
candidate for the
#GodalmingandAsh
constituency!
I will therefore once again be standing against Jeremy Hunt at the next GE.
More to follow shortly!
I have had some fantastic messages from Lib Dems (and a decent number of Greens too!) from across the country today talking about
#ProgressiveAlliance
and how we work here in
#Godalming
&
#Waverley
. If we can do this sort of thing in
#Surrey
we can do it anywhere.

After serving as Deputy Leader of
@WaverleyBC
following the local elections in 2019 I have tonight been elected Leader of the Council. Not enough words in a tweet to express my thanks to my colleagues from all parties and to the outgoing leader, Cllr John Ward.
Thank you
@ClaireMatthes
for all your help and to all
@TheGreenParty
colleagues who are leafleting & canvassing alongside Lib Dems. Nothing about the
#UniteToRemain
agreement compels Greens to help - this shows the extent of how much we already work together for
#SouthWestSurrey
I have voted! Well I have to say that standing where you live means that when you go to vote it’s quite an experience- Guess who I voted for? But then to be greeted by

@unitetoremain
@SWScompass
UK BUDGET - well it’s always fun to have your local MP as the Chancellor and be the local council leader because it’s means I know at least one person has explained to him the issues for local government finance. Me. Never the most constructive of chats I might add.
My name is Paul Follows. I am the
@LibDems
🔶 candidate standing against Jeremy Hunt.
Below is just a sample of the flood of material that residents in
#GodalmingandAsh
are being bombarded with.
You can help us, wherever you are in the UK, to get our message out there and
This afternoon I was pleased to be able to welcome

Good afternoon everyone. Although we haven’t got over the line in
#SouthWestSurrey
this time we really have massively expanded our presence. Our campaign was cross-party, and our support was broad - and I am extremely proud of what we have achieved together.
A stark contrast to the torrential downpour on my visit last week! Lots of activity in

Whether it's Hunt or someone else,

What I can say for sure tonight is this -
I will definitely be on the ballot.
What about you

Sometimes it hard to remember on days like this that this is the UK.
The utter twisting and manipulation of ‘values’. The subversion (not just here but in many policy areas) of the legal provisions that protect all of us. The total misrepresentation of migration and human
As an elected public servant I sometimes feel like I need to moderate my personal feelings on some matters. However this time I cannot. Clearly local conservatives are content to prop up their morally bankrupt leader.
I am pleased to announce and thoroughly honoured to have been elected by the people of Godalming (Central and Ockford) to represent them as a Godalming Town Councillor and also a Waverley Borough Councillor.
🎵 Bravely taking to his feet, He beat a very brave retreat 🎵. Well done
@Jeremy_Hunt
you managed to get out just in time for the standards debate. 👏🏻

Whether I win or lose on Thursday I will at least know I have engaged honestly, for what I believe in and have not resorted to scaremongering, respected those who didn’t share my opinion and none of my colleagues resorted heckling, flat out lying or negativity online or elsewhere
1/2. As expected, a number of people have already jumped on the ECHR for trouncing all over our ‘sovereignty’. Just a few things, 1) it’s not an EU court (that’s bound to come up) 2) the only non members are RUSSIA and BELARUS in Europe and finally…
Attacking someone caring for their son and making weight jokes about other parliamentarians- is this what the budget really means in 2024? Is that really appropriate
@Jeremy_Hunt

Well I have been out around the constituency now since just before 8am this morning (and up since 5am). 90mins break down for some dinner and a much needed glass of wine before heading to the count at The Edge I’m

Good afternoon
@Jeremy_Hunt
. Given that the
#SueGrayReport
has now been published and confirmed what can only be described as a serious failure of political and moral leadership, will you now write to the 1922 Committee to call for the PM's resignation?
I am 33 years old. This is where I live. When the time comes it is my intent to stand for the County seat of Godalming South, Milford and Witley - and you better believe I’ll be back at the next general election :)
As I see
#Conservatives
MPs falling over themselves to talk about failing water companies I remember - It has been your job, your responsibility to regulate this industry. For over a decade. Here in
#Waverley
I only ever see local councillors doing what they can to help. Not MPs.
Despite knowing the harm it would do. Despite his own constituency voting remain. Despite a crushing EU and Local election cycle in support of remain supporting parties.
@WaverleyLibDems
@SWScompass
@EM_SWSurrey
Today I have written to
@Jeremy_Hunt
expressing concerns raised to me by residents about the PM, parties & covid rules. I have reminded him that silence is not an option and that silence (+ even support) from other local Conservatives merely condones the behaviour.
@farnhamherald
Perhaps this is the case when you are a multi-millionaire who can funnel 100k+ into his own campaign without breaking a sweat - but it’s great deal more than the national or local average and a massive indicator as to why the cost of living crisis impacting residents across the
Good afternoon everyone. I thought I would just try to illustrate the scale of the changes here in Godalming (for the Town Council) and Waverley (For the Borough Council).
Hope that makes sense and gives a feel for what’s now going on.
Tomorrow I will formally submit my nomination papers to stand here in
#SouthWestSurrey
in
#GE2019
. Special thanks to

Lib Dem Cllr
@markm_w
for proposing me and to former local Green Party candidate Cllr
@SteveWil
for seconding (below). Thank you to all 10 who signed :)
@Jeremy_Hunt
@Telegraph
And correct me if I’m wrong, you were a rebel less than 2% of the time when you look at parliamentary votes, so you had no issues propping him up?
It’s polling day!!!!!
#SouthWestSurrey

A thank you, a little bit about polling stations. And as I live here too in
#Godalming
, I’m heading to vote about lunchtime. Paul Follows, Liberal Democrat -
@WaverleyLibDems
Waverley Borough Council tonight...
EVERY Tory voted against our very basic motion tonight, simply asking the council write a letter to our MP's urging them to back the Climate and Ecological Emergency (CEE) bill.
The motion passes as this is not a Tory-controlled council.
When your local borough council is in a constituency where the local Tory MP,
@Jeremy_Hunt
, feels he needs to bring in external PR people to help his party fight local elections…how do you record that on your local electoral expenses exactly?
Following the stunning outcome in
#NorthShropshire
it’s always heartening to wake up to news of such a victory. Recieving, before 7am, around 50 messages from local residents telling me
#SouthWestSurrey
is next…that is pretty heartening too!
And by 6 votes to 5, the REFUSAL motion but forward by Lib Dem Opposition Cllr Penny Rivers is carried. Huge result for Waverley,
@WaverleyBC
and the campaign to stop this. A very close call though. Thankfully this committee had good opposition councillors.
Proud to stand beside the other members of the
@LibDems
group at Surrey County Council
@Surreycclibdems
- incl. 4 from
#Waverley
and 5 from our neighbours in
#Guildford
. Hard work all year round & progressive alliance relationships with local Greens & Indies key to the local team
I am sure we all know what happens now. It will be ‘lefty lawyers’, the ‘woke’, ‘liberals, and then almost certainly judges and the legal system itself to blame.
What this is though is the defeat of an atrocious, heartless and illegal policy.
Immigration is a complex subject
@Jeremy_Hunt
ALL councils are struggling.
You literally sat across from me at my conference table at Waverley BC & sat there almost vacantly as I repeated what I have been telling you for years - that without support, local government will collapse. Everywhere.
You are part of this
A public meeting to discuss residents concerns about water issues in the borough. The chamber is full. The zoom meeting contains dozens of residents. Other residents have submitted written testimony.

It is my great honour to announce that I have been selected as the Lib Dem Candidate for the Parliamentary seat of South West Surrey.
The only place I have ever wanted to stand (and have ever tried to stand) is here where I live, my home.
@WaverleyLibDems
That feeling when I realise the
#Godalming
Town Council
@godalmingtc
budget I introduced last night had more money in it for children’s services than the chancellor of the UK gave in his autumn statement for the whole country (spoiler alert, he gave 0).
To protect our environment, our local economy and our local residents homes and businesses - we have a duty to act. Thank you to all my colleagues of the
@WaverleyBC
executive and to those who have supported us in this endeavour.
Just a normal day….at the high court fighting fossil fuel extraction and a UK government minister - alongside my fantastic, progressive colleagues from
@WaverleyBC
@godalmingtc
It is my great pleasure to announce that I have been nominated to stand for re-election for the

Central & Ockford Ward and will be on the ballot for the election on May 4th 2023 alongside my colleague

Absolutely shocking. If only you were a member of the party in power for the last decade, or if you had spent most of that time as some kind of minister for health or something like that? 🧐
Deeply shocking to hear that the Ockenden review into Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust now looking at 900 cases meaning avoidable deaths may be on the scale of Mid Staffs. We now need to conclude it speedily and ask fundamental questions about maternity safety
It has all become clear. What the country was missing in terms of the cost of living crisis was the empathy and shared pain that can only come from having a multi-millionaire PM. How did I not see that?!
The 🔶 team out today in
#Ash
- our first session of the new year and what I have heard most so far this morning - WHEN will there be an election and HOW MUCH LONGER do we have to endure this government?
Well - I couldn’t agree more
#GeneralElectionNow
A bright and chilly morning here in
#Ash
with the team. With Cllr Richard Lucas (LD, Ash Vale) Cllr Danielle Newson (LD, Tillingbourne) and activists Kayley, Mike and Martin. Good support on the doors and people looking for change!
Great to be out in
#Chiddingfold
yesterday to say thank you to residents for trusting
@WaverleyLibDems
and
@davebusby86
with their votes in the recent by-election. A very rainy afternoon 🌧️ but good to get out and talk to residents.
@Jeremy_Hunt
Ordinarily I wouldn't dream of commenting on such a tweet but this one feels particularly tone deaf to feelings of constituents that are baffled as to why their MP voted against an extension to
#FreeSchoolMeals
last week. 17,000 eligible children in
#Surrey
.
Polls are now OPEN in the Godalming Central and Ockford By-election.
7am-10pm today.
I’ll be between the Polling Stations at the Wilfrid Noyce and St Marks.
I am supporting my colleague TOM KIEHL who I hope will get your support today today.
Cllr Paul Follows
I think it’s fair to say we all welcome this
@Jeremy_Hunt
- but let me ask you - when the opportunity came up in the commons to vote to restrict and ban this type of fracking and fossil fuel extraction, how did you vote?
@farnhamherald
@surreylive
@ZoeFranklinLD
Would this be anything like the plans the local Tories in
#Woking
had for the economy there?
The largest single debt of any borough council in the United Kingdom - ever!
A mess that my LibDem colleagues in Woking are now having to help clear up…
Very enjoyable visit to Woking to support the brilliant
@JonathanLord
.
People here know: the Conservatives have a plan, which is delivering for the economy. Labour have no plan, which would just take us back to square one.
IT’S ON!!
I have the privilege of representing the Lib Dems here in my home seat of
#SouthWestSurrey
. I’m going to give it everything I can and this seat is winnable - but only with your support.
If you want to help out, please see the link below!
@Charliehunt1
@Jeremy_Hunt
@farnhamherald
At the end of the day, his actions are an enabler to corruption. That is indefensible. That he doesn’t even take part int he subsequent debate is even more so.
Seats where Lib Dem vote was up over 10000:
Esher & Walton +18015
South West Surrey +17407
South Cambridgeshire +16009
Hitchin & Harpenden +14588
Finchley & Golders Green +14137
Wokingham +13839
Wimbledon +12273
Wantage +12198
St Albans +10405
Tunbridge Wells +10119
The chaos never stops does it?
So many people need the government of this country to be functional and working for them - and all it does is face inwards.
#GeneralElectionNow
Overworked, unpaid, understaffed hospitals, local government, schools -
@Jeremy_Hunt
says you simply aren’t working hard enough and you need to be more ‘efficient’.
What a slap in the face to some of the most dedicated, hardest working people in this country.
Nothing screams dodgy, corrupt and immoral more than changing the rules to make sure you don’t get in trouble.
Regardless party differences / politics there used to at least be respect for institutions and the rules. Seemingly we are through the looking glass now…
RESULT!!!: for the 2nd time the
#UKOG
application to ‘explore’ aka drill for hydrocarbons has been REFUSED.
A refusal motion from Cllr
@Penny__Rivers
(Lib Dem, Godalming North) prevailed 6 votes to 5. Sustained opposition to this from residents,
@WaverleyBC
for over a year!
Red Court application in
#Haslemere
is REFUSED by the Western Pla. of WBC - a great victory for residents, progressive councillors and the community at large. Brownfield over green should ALWAYS be preferred. Guess what - the only people that voted for it were the local Tories.
Well the clue is in the name of the new constituency and today it’s been great to join activists and other local councillors in….*drumroll*
#Godalming
this afternoon and
#Ash
this morning.
People want change in
#GodalmingandAsh
and they want a say, now.
@Jeremy_Hunt
I’m a little curious why you are meeting with them, as you aren’t their MP? I thought there were very clear rules on this?
Did you invite the county councillor for Cranleigh?
1/2 : I am thrilled to see that
@WaverleyBC

UK. Our plans are a true progressive fusion of environmental polices from all the parties that make up the alliance.
Very pleased to finally confirm that a group of 6 local authorities, including
@WaverleyBC
(where the site is situated), has acquired
@TicesMeadow
to maintain it in public ownership and safeguard it for the future.
@farnhamherald
I will call out if we see no extra police, no extra nurses, if local government receives no extra funding, if climate change is ignored. I will speak up to uphold our rights and those of our European friends.
Today’s
#BramleyThursday
team, out in the rain and talking to residents. Stopped on the street by an angry resident who had seen the PM’s press conference this morning.
She wanted compassion back in the UK - I say let’s make that happen.
