When a teacher tells you that the AI software they're using is "free". It's free *for now*.
Amazon, Netflix, Uber etc were built on the idea that if they make something cheap and convenient for long enough, they'll eventually starve out the competition. Then they can charge whatever they like and give you fuck-all, because you have no other option. AI will be the same.
