There's been lots of coverage on corridor care. No NHS leader would say this is acceptable but as this good article shows it may be the lesser of 2 evils. Quotes @NHSConfed @ConfedMatthew "NHS leaders are doing all they can to find more appropriate spaces" https://t.co/knxjGKKhjj

Yesterday on #bbcpm, @ConfedMatthew set out why restructuring the NHS isn't the answer to addressing its challenges, but that changing the way money flows from the centre is key to enabling the Integrated Care System structure to work. Listen back. 🎧👇

GP federations have a really important role as part of the primary care family and a key role in driving primary care collaboration @NHSConfed #PCnetwork

While more support is absolutely needed, the group has made a lot of progress since my last visit two years ago, and I am convinced that the leadership of Andrew and Richard and their wider board puts them in a strong position to deal with these challenges.

Balancing the need to improve urgent and emergency care alongside while continuing to deliver planned care will not be easy. It's a test case for effective system working, but likely to come down to whether the leftward shift is being adequately resourced. At the moment it isn't.

With no other drop-in services available in Leicester, it is certain that developing solutions with primary and community partners will be key. We are keen to share learning and insights on how this might be done from what we are seeing at a national level.

The trust is a major regional player, and I was impressed by their determination to use their scale to lead on the development of integrated working and prevention within the region. Bending the demand curve is a major challenge, with the biggest and busiest ED in the country.

I also met Andrew Moore, their new group chair. He enters the NHS after a long career in business on the boards of Asda/Walmart and Marks and Spencer. Exciting to see how they might bring this entrepreneurial thinking to their strategy.

Impressive use of technology throughout the facility, from airport-style check-in counters to the way that their full data infrastructure is on the FDP (the first in England) - completely paperless and with very little use of whiteboards - very much designed for the future.

We were able to get a first look at their new elective hub, the East Midlands Planned Care Centre, which opens on Monday, providing improved access for 100,000 patients a year - building on UHL's success as one of the trusts that has most reduced long waits.
