There's Always This Year, out 3/26/24. I am so proud of this book, and I feel very lucky that I got to write it. It would mean a lot to me if you would preorder it and also share it with folks who might be into it. Gratitude, always.
been watching this clip and thinking about how right this person is about narratives getting built around the people protecting themselves. Like how quickly the story here became "THE PROTESTERS HAVE THEIR OWN SHIELDS" as if that action was taken for no reason at all
“We came out here in t-shirts, they started gassing us. We came back with respirators, they started shooting us. We came back with vests, they started aiming for the head... And now they call us terrorists. Who’s escalating this? It’s not us.”
@MacSmiff
every time I hear that grinch song I think damn they couldn't have even done my guy the service of breaking this up with a little chorus, just on his ass for six straight verses with no hook
met one of my dearest pals thru this kind of arrangement years ago & when our girlfriends broke up with us (within like 2 weeks of each other) there was this really sweet moment that was like “hey man…I think we have something special and I don’t want this to be the end for us”
if you come to my funeral with that shit on, I would be offended if you DIDNT find a quiet and aesthetically pleasing corner amidst the grieving to get a fit pic
how did everyone in the studio keep a straight face when Nelly walked in that damn booth, put headphones on, stepped up to the mic and right out the gate said "good gracious, ass is bodacious"
I’m at a point where I’m fairly flexible with pals or even acquaintances in this situation but earlier this year a person hit me at 8pm on a weeknight with “I’m in your city, seeing if you’re free tonight” & I was like brother the tonight in question is already upon us
seeing a person earnestly, seriously, respond to a person who was literally just shot in a mass shooting by telling them to register to vote (& register their friends) has pushed me to a place beyond rage & into a real sadness. worried about dwindling brains & capacity for care.
Good luck to all the immensely talented nominees at
#TheOscars
tonight! I do wish I could be there with you... and if any winners feel the same way, feel free to swing by my place afterwards and let me hold your little gold guy!
it is wild that Charlie Brown, in the plainest language possible, would always be saying “y’all I am DEPRESSED fr” and his friends would all be like hey man fuck outta here with all that can’t you see we’re trying to have a good time
I'm back to getting up 50-75 jumpshots in the evenings when I can & today someone saw me on the court & watched me make a few in a row & yelled HEY MAN, THERE'S A TORNADO WARNING & I thought it was some kind of compliment on my shooting(???) so I yelled back I KNOW THAT'S RIGHT
Tyrese Haliburton said "I am going to be here and I am going to help change the culture and history of this franchise" and the kings were like woah there I think that's enough pal
Damian Lillard admits that life in Milwaukee is 'lonely' and he doesn't 'have much of a life.'
“Go to practice, go home, watch boxing, play video games. Man, I type in [boxing website] FightHype on YouTube 100 times and be praying for something new to be on there. Seriously, I…

says the Suns should've benched Chris Paul instead of Deandre Ayton 👀
"They benched the wrong person. They should've benched Chris."

this is the final evolution
first, you just want to go home
then, the homies convince you to stay out a bit longer and you end up having A Real Time
and finally, you become the reason no one else can go home
Adult Arthur looks like he used to front a regionally successful pop punk band in the late 00s that was just a few years too late to REALLY catch the big commercial wave so then he got into tech startups
I don't watch SNL much (apologies) & I actually don't really know much about Maya Rudolph's career, so late last night while listening to old Minnie Riperton records was the first time I saw this SNL promo shot where Rudolph recreated her mom's album cover & boyyy I got EMOTIONAL
Seeing people say stuff like “how did those people vote?” In regards to a town in Ohio being poisoned & lied to is unsurprising, still ghoulish. political theater shit has rotted people’s brains past the point of repair. If nothing else, there are children among those people.
Michael K. Williams & I once shared a conversation at some party thing I didn't fit in or feel good at. He sat down in a corner I was hiding in & just wanted to talk about poems for a while. All I said was "I write," & he treated me with warmth. like I'd unlocked a universe.
DMX was also, plainly, a very good rapper. One who was impossible to push around on a beat. So many of those Swizz tracks were almost designed to overpower rappers, and X would take them apart. Tear them down to the foundation.
we will do whatever it takes to radicalize you brother. I haven’t given up hope, I’ve seen the work you have done to try and uplift and liberate incarcerated folks.
hard for me to understand how anyone is expected to just keep going today with schedules and meetings and deadlines or whatever else. But especially thinking of parents having to send kids to school, kids having to go to school.
that lil gmail thing that's like "hey listen you clown, you wrote the word attached in this email but you haven't attached anything" has saved me from taking several Ls
not opposed to any Disney villain getting their own film & I look forward to the Scar origin story film because it feels like there was some fucked up stuff going on in that family that we didn't get a fair glimpse of & normally I mind my own business but not this time
favorite part of the spelling bee is when the young folks say “can I please have all of the information” I’m on the couch like yes get that information, ask for what you need, also as someone who didn’t know this word existed 30 seconds ago I, too, would like all the information
the hallmark christmas movies waste no time getting to the heart of the drama -- she has MET the love interest, she has MET his daughter, he HATES the mayor, unfortunately the mayor is her FATHER, we are less than ten minutes in
banana pudding is wild because I actually don't care much at all for the few primary ingredients on their own, but you put them shits together and they are the '96 Bulls
one of the older folks who lives on my block is trying to walk six million steps this year, and every time he sees me, I ask how it's going and he excitedly takes an updated printout out of his pocket, showing his year-to-date steps, steps per day, and total mileage
Elmo each day the abyss we stare into grows a unique horror. one that was previously unfathomable in nature. our inevitable doom which once accelerated in years, or months, now accelerates in hours, even minutes.
however I did have a good grapefruit earlier, thank you for asking
during my periods of being unhoused/housing instability, I felt either entirely invisible or a hyper-visible vessel for scorn in almost every place in this city except for the library, and I will never forget that or stop feeling gratitude for it
As police tried to clear streets, they were met with violence from some and took action, including using mace and pepper spray as appropriate to keep crowds in sidewalks.
The UK’s first socially distanced concert is happening now in Newcastle.
Attendees have their own private viewing area with 6-feet of space between them.
A whole new world...
walked by two people talking & heard a brief clip of a conversation, one of them saying "don't hand me a thin straw when you know it's a thick drink" & I thought yes, absolutely, and also what a saying. Can truly extend that metaphor into several life conflicts & complications
John Stockton (yes, that one) is in this particularly over-the-top anti-vaxx documentary trailer talking about "my significant amount of research" about COVID-19.
The documentary's page asks "Do Masks Really Work?" and "How Will We Really Know That a COVID Vaccine is Safe?"
the Sharpton clip I've seen bouncing around is upsetting, but not surprising. one of the last of a handful of times I got arrested it was for stealing deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush. I was living out of a storage unit, and had finally gotten a job interview after months.
I thought something immensely serious/devastating had happened because I don't really pay attention to this kinda stuff, so imagine my shock when I traced back to the root of all this & saw my man simply caught the bad end of a "1 gotta go" from strangers on the internet
No matter how hard it gets, stick your chest out, keep your head up and handle it.

You got this
@prattprattpratt
. Your family, friends, colleagues & everyone who’s ever crossed paths with you knows your heart and your worth!
Have maybe said this before but when I was a kid and my parents used to say they had to "run errands" I would get annoyed by the lack of clarity & specificity, but now that I am of an Errand Running Age, I understand. I stay running errands, errands be beating my ass
we have been friends for like 14 years now & truly, love to both of our exes for bringing us together and also knowing when it was time to give up on us lmao
this is exactly why at the end of a first date if things are going well, I lean in and whisper “wanna go somewhere a little more private” and then take her to a park and make her defend me on ten straight isolation plays
if there is any levity in today, let it be in the person I heard shouting encouragement through a megaphone downtown earlier, stopping mid-sentence to point at a fellow protester & say "hey man, you're wearing a MICHIGAN shirt out here??"
The city remains true to itself
so much coverage of the Amazon Rainforest that I've seen fails to mention that people live there, or that people are from there. I appreciated this, as I keep trying to read more.
I simply cannot care about a relationship between two people I do not know. my beloved dog has grown more anxious with the changing season & has begun to hide my socks with increasing frequency. my favorite baker has stopped selling cinnamon rolls. I've got honest to god PROBLEMS
Idk if it’s oldhead coded but I learned it from my mom (& from years of working service gigs) — actually offer a greeting to working folks. Don’t just walk up on ppl & jump directly into your order/need/demand. Doesn’t have to be a whole convo, but an interaction-opening greeting
Thinking back to this Didion interview I read at the top of the year, I was so delighted by the clarity and directness of these two answers, and how they both mirrored my own feelings.
Adam Levine tells Zane Lowe he's "sad" that there's no bands anymore:
"When the first Maroon 5 album came out there were still other bands. I feel like there aren’t any bands anymore, you know? That’s the thing that makes me kind of sad ... I feel like they’re a dying breed."
we started by just playing FIFA together & never speaking at all while our girlfriends did Other Stuff & then one day he put on the first Bloc Party album & I said “this album is sick” & he said “hell yeah dude, sick album for sure” & those were our first words after a full month
Brother I am currently standing over my sink eating out of three different pints of ice cream at once so the answer is yes, and I appreciate you asking
And so I ran the mile or so back to my house in an increasingly violent downpour, clinging to the brief moment when I thought that this well meaning stranger was actually complimenting my renewed shooting touch
