I have seen @ICRC ’s great work in Northern Ethiopia. But also have seen the strain that the fighting is putting on services and threatening lives. Hospitals in #Tigray using unexpired drugs is a sign that access is being blocked. It must improve or people will continue to die.

Having recently visited #Tigray it is no surprise that 350,000 people now face famine like conditions. Even if humanitarian aid increases this number is set to grow to 400,000. This is a wake up call. A humanitarian ceasefire is urgently needed to prevent many avoidable deaths.

This graph from Maxwell & Majid (2016) has a clear lesson for famine risks today in #Yemen & #SouthSudan : don't wait to act. In Somalia 2011, many deaths occurred before famine was declared. It will also be the case for many countries facing emergency levels of humanitarian need.
