We use remote thermometers to monitor rail temperatures, and each of our local teams will be keeping a close eye on those right through the weekend. We’ll also be keeping an eye on overhead wires and equipment rooms as it gets hotter. /4

Trains run on steel rails, which expand in the heat. While air temperatures may reach 30c, rail temperatures will be much higher. We paint sections of them white to reflect heat, but there’s only so much that can achieve before we may need to slow trains down in some areas. /3

Our specialist weather forecaster, based in Scotland’s railway control room, gave us the detailed forecast - we expect to see up to 30 degrees in some areas on Saturday, with temperatures already starting to rise. /2

📢🥵 We’ve just held an extreme weather meeting with our teams across Scotland and our train operators. Very hot weather is expected over the coming days. Our preparations are well underway to deal with this and keep people and freight moving. /1

✅ Good news from Cowdenbeath. Our rail incident officer on-site is now reopening the line, following discussions with the emergency services. Once that's done, we'll work with @ScotRail to restore the normal timetable, getting their trains and crews back into position ASAP.

Both lines remain closed through Cowdenbeath station in Fife, while @fire_scot deals with an incident near the railway. We're working with @ScotRail to keep train services moving outwith the affected area where we can.

We’re assisting the fire service who are dealing with a fire next to the railway at Cowdenbeath. We’ve had to close both lines through the area for now. We’ll share another update soon. @ScotRail @LNER @CrossCountryUK.

✅ Good news from Stirling. We've removed the cattle from the railway, and our team is in the process of reopening the line and getting trains moving again ASAP. @ScotRail @LNER.

We have staff responding to a report of three cows which have strayed onto the railway in the Stirling area. The team are working to remove them as quickly as we can, to get trains back on the move again. More soon. @ScotRail @LNER.
