My philosophy in a tweet, as things stand: Ontology: Maybe some kind of reductionism? Epistemology: Basically pragmatism. Philosophy of Religion: Agnosticism, I guess. Theology: None. Politics: Boring normie liberal centrism. Moral Philosophy: Rule-consequentialism-ish.

I believe Denis Johnson’s TREE OF SMOKE is one of the ten best novels produced by an American writer.

Denis Johnson excels at creating unique, unforgettable characters. The description of Father Carignan in TREE OF SMOKE is full of concrete details with an echo behind them. Great stuff.

Denis Johnson always has great dialogue. Human conversation is usually disjointed. People rarely are direct about what they want or exactly how they feel. They usually couch things such that an inference must be made. It’s a dance. Excerpt from TREE OF SMOKE.

My present to myself, for when I get all my grades done and turned in, is to read the stories of Micro Mayhem volume 2, from @MythicPicnic, which covers two of my favorite subjects: Sports and Spiders! Thanks @NathanBorn2010 for putting this together!

Predator (1987) still rules because it shifts from macho action movie to pure survival horror without missing a beat. McTiernan turns the jungle into a pressure cooker, and every reveal of the creature hits like a new escalation.
