New work from our lab demonstrates that when contingencies shift from punishment to reward, flexible behavior is related to increases in VTA GABA (and not dopamine!) neuron activity 👉
New lab paper by Merridee Lefner identifying a novel role for VTA GABA neurons in behavioral flexibility . GABA, but NOT dopamine, neuron activation correlates with behavior when cues unexpectedly shift from predicting punishment to predicting reward.

New work from the lab led by the incomparable Dr. Torrado Pacheco with contributions from rotating student Randall Olson (from @DrAtheirAbbas lab) and RA Gabi Garza (now grad student @UMich 🙌).
4/n Consistent with this idea, we find that psilocybin robustly improves cognitive flexibility in rats using a task where animals switched multiple times between previously learned strategies in response to uncued changes in the environment

New paper from our lab: during learning of a punishment risk task, action execution and reward (but not the punisher) influences activity in dmPFC & VTA, with diazepam effects on neural activity. Work led by David Jacobs, Madeleine Allen & @juncholp .
