Trading for Carson Wentz when Deshaun Watson is available is a little like trading up to draft Mitchell Trubisky when Deshaun Watson is available.
#Bears
Chris Bassitt was lauded for his leadership with A’s. Bob Melvin absolutely loved him. There’s risk in the age of most of the Mets rotation, but it has a chance to be one of the strongest staffs in the NL. Outstanding pickup.
We said goodbye to Pops after 10 wonderful years. I joked he was the worst Labrador because he was afraid of the water & wouldn’t play fetch, but he was the best damn friend. Thanks to
@LabRescueLRCP
for bringing us together & Arcadia Animal Clinic for being with us at the end.
The Dodgers are spending more on flights for Yamamoto’s friends & family than it would cost for The Angels or Jays to travel a radio broadcaster for the year.
How incredible is The Braves run? They opened play on June 2nd, 10.5 games behind the Mets. Since then, the Mets have played at a .595 clip. That’s a 96 win pace and The Braves have caught them! Atlanta’s ~.718 Winning percentage would be a 116 win season over a full year!
So, local coverage is bad? This is stupid. The Athletic being local is a feature not a bug. To the self important executives who want higher stock, but, STILL don't understand that the quality and credibility of your content drives eyes & ears: pound sand.
NEW from
@benjstrauss
on Athletic changes: "The NFL and EPL dominate reader interest, and staffing for those leagues remains mostly unchanged. Because NHL and Major League Baseball audiences are more local, those leagues will have some beats eliminated."
I’ve gotten to know Daulton Varsho pretty well over the last couple years. Just a terrific guy who I think will flourish with Jays. He plays with Football player intensity & at that same speed.
No one should go through what my friend
@CaseyStern
’s kids have. But the work he’s doing now to help create better, safer lives for kids who’ve been subjected to abuse is inspiring. You can read about it here & support Operation ExHale
Not sure any broadcaster has been treated worse by his employer, Rogers. Replaced by simulcasts for a portion of ‘21, not traveling for almost all of the last 2 years.
@benwag247
is a good dude & announcer and neither he nor Jays fans deserve to be treated like he was.
Rogers pulling the plug on radio play-by-play voice Ben Wagner. According to sources there were no negotiations with the
#Bluejays
radio voice, just see ya later and thanks for the memories. We’ll have more details soon.
Now that teams have announced their opening day starters, it would be GREAT if the Angels & Jays announced they're traveling their radio crews this season.
A quick thanks to those
@MLBNetworkRadio
listeners who’ve stuck with us over the last 3 1/2 months, through rule change debates, down ballot hall candidates, surprisingly controversial Mt. Rushmores & too much labor talk. We appreciate you & can’t wait for what’s ahead: GAMES!
1/4 of the way through the season, Cincinnati has allowed fewest runs in the NL. Incredible turnaround from a staff that allowed the most in the NL (819) last year.
I let the gato out of the bag this morning, but super excited to be hosting a weekly college baseball show this year on
@SXMCollege
with the world’s best bucket hat model,
@Mike_Rooney
! *not pictured, bucket hat.
Baseball’s Hall needs a category to honor people like Dusty Baker with induction. Nearly 2000 wins as a manager, 5 teams to division titles, nearly 2000 hits, a pair of all-star games as a player. He’s one of the most important figures in baseball history.
I’d love to see others post some of their favorite stories. A veteran reporter said last night, Jake’s ability to connect with the people he covers is the best he’d seen in years.
The assault on his character today is sad, malicious & factually inaccurate.
I wanna share some great stories this season on random days. I hope you enjoy some of the work done in the clubhouse by an accountable reporter with a great work ethic
The Angels
@BallySports
broadcasts this weekend were an embarrassment.
They reversed course today & will call games in-person this week. But this series showed why that needs to be a full-time commitment.
Column w/ interviews from Matt Vasgersian & Gubi:
Man, Chicago is gonna love
@BoogSciambi
. It’s a perfect match, and so excited for my hometown &
@Cubs
fans get to know my wife’s favorite broadcaster and one of my favorite human beings. Congrats, Boog!
What a moment. José Ramírez blocked the top of the steps to the dugout after the handshake line so Tito had to stay on the field and receive a longer ovation from the crowd. Then the rest of the team circled him and kept him out in front of a roaring crowd even longer.
You’re gonna have to forgive the thread, but, Erika & I Got the sad news this morning that our friend & my colleague Mel Antonen passed away last night. He was just incredibly kind, warm, funny, and a person I always loved to be around.
Maybe I’m in the minority on this, but, I don’t need histories of sports shutting down a year ago since we’re still living through the same pandemic. Maybe wait a couple years? It’s still too close to the anxiety of last March for me to try and gain perspective.
Just travel your announcers. It’s not that flippin’ hard. Stop cheapening your product, devaluing the work of your announcers & disrespecting your fans!
My Christmas present to myself. Full sheet of ‘84 Topps had framed. Looked so good, did a 2nd too. Thanks to
@kurtvan
for the idea 15+ years ago. He had a sheet up in his office & I thought it was the coolest thing
Seen a couple other broadcasters mention this. It’s very likely Manfred had his voice feeding back to him on a delay. It sucks. And it makes you feel like you can’t put together 3 words in a row. You never get used to that.
Excited to announce that I’m gonna get a little extra time in Omaha this year. I’ll be filling in for
@JakeEisenberg_
on
@OMAStormChasers
broadcasts next week, and
@CespedesBBQ
will be joining me in the booth June 9th-11th! (Yes it takes 3 people to fill Eisenberg’s shoes)
Baseball Friends, could you please RT this short survey. Trying to find out from as many fans as possible what’s most important on a radio pre-game show. Should take less than 5 minutes. Thanks!
One other thing on this: we need to stop finding ways to try and make baseball the way it used to be. We need to find ways to modernize it and make it better, but nostalgia is baseball’s greatest blessing & biggest curse
9 years ago we got our beloved Pops, from
@LabRescueLRCP
. Thanks for being our best friend, big guy. Here’s to many more years enjoying your Arizona retirement
I’d resisted the pleas for a 3rd dog…until we met this beautiful little lady yesterday. Welcome to the family, Peg! And thanks to
@aawlspca
for bringing her into our lives and this forever home!
My first
@WBCBaseball
experience has been exceptional.Getting a chance to work with a friend like
@spillygoat19
was amazing. So were the stories we’re lucky to share. Thanks to
@Hunter_Reiser
&
@danrow15599
. The WBC is special & I hope everyone gets to experience it! On to Miami!
I just want to say a few things about
@LenKasper
& this seems like a good time. You’d be hard pressed to find an announcer under the age of 50 who Len hasn’t had an impact on. Whether it be advice, critique or encouragement, his impact is significant. Here's mine: 1/
Well, this is a treat. For 3 days I get to sit next to great
@Dan_Dickerson
on
@Tigers
Radio. Eduardo Rodriguez gets the ball to start the 2nd half. 10:10pET. Pregame 9:45p
@971theticketxyt
Last night, I absolutely blew the call on the final play of the game. I went back & listened, it was incomprehensible. Not sure if I should feel embarrassed or just laugh at it, because, kids, it was THAT bad. Woof.
No shortage of people from players to coaches to front office have talked about the positive impact Asdrúbal had in his short time here. Total pro. Pulling for him in the pennant race.
Unbelievably angry about this story and the ridiculousness of a SUSPENDING an announcer pointing out a team got better.
But, this line in the story made me see red. "Announcer's Apparel"? Absolutely, Deplorable. Glad Orioles broadcasters are more professional than their employer
Just terrible to see Nick Burdi go down. Already had one Tommy John, was such a dominant force in college & was so excited to see him throw the ball well I Pittsburgh. Fingers crossed for him.
Big day today. This guy is 5! Happy Birthday to Rocky. He’s a rescue from
@aawlspca
who was surrendered in the spring of 2020. A rarity that we have his birthday! Rescue animals rule & this dude is the sweetest doof ever.
