Nicest guy in transplantation!!!
@KimOlthoff @Penn_Transplant @PennMedicine @pennsurgery One of my favourite people in all of transplant. All of Philadelphia — and @Penn_Transplant in particular — are lucky to have someone like Dr. Abt. Congrats, my friend.

Use evidence based guidelines, tell patients surgery hurts and set their expectations regarding how many pills most patients take, Tylenol and ibuprofen around the clock, and discussing new persistent use after surgery. #rasjacs

PROs are tough. About 5 percent of patient will report severe pain, many of these patients are particularly at risk for persistent use after surgery. I don’t think opioids are the solution for these complex patients, both short-term and long-term

Patients with a history of opioid use disorder need expertise from pain docs and a specific pre op pain plan. Takes resources which make it hard to achieve #rasjacs
@MichaelEnglesbe @RASACS @ElmohebM @hayfarani These prescribing guidelines from @UMichSurgery are fantastic; every resident should have this on the back of their badge. Remaining challenges for such guidelines: 1) how do you manage patients with a history of opioid use/misuse? #RASJACS

I agree that the roots of this are deep. We all have culpability. I’m optimistic that the Physician community is moving things in the right direction. #rasjacs

It does drive me crazy when people have been in the hospital for a while and not taking any opioids or complaining of pain and we discharge him, and we send them home with a bottle full of pills #rasjacs

I find doing this one of the coolest things in liver transplantation. Flow probes are key.
