What do you dislike about RG&E?
RG&E extracts ~$100 million in profits from our region every year for their parent comany's shareholders. If you agree we need to
#ReplaceRGE
with a public utility that puts our community first, join our April 5th rally:
Really powerful action at the State Capitol with NY Renews with 100s of New Yorkers from across the state calling on
@CarlHeastie
and
@GovKathyHochul
to get off the fence and pass the
#ClimateJobsJustice
Package!
If RG&E was a public utility we would pay employees to improve our service and billing issues. Not lobby our politicians on behalf of a multinational corporation that's trying to raise our rates by 20%.
#ReplaceRGE
We agree that Rochester MN is a beautiful city. One of our favorite things about the other Rochester is that they have a non-profit publicly-owned power utility!
If you think Rochester NY deserves the same, come to our Town Hall in Fairport Oct 25th.
Many cities that have adopted public power (like Anaheim, CA and nearby Fairport, NY) enjoy lower utility bills and more renewables! Meanwhile, in Rochester, RG&E puts profit over people and ignores the climate crisis. The only solution is energy democracy.
Big news! Legislation for a public power study was approved in committee tonight at the Monroe County Legislature! Join our rally April 5 to show
@CountyExecBello
that the community is ready for a local, nonprofit alternative to RG&E!
RG&E and Avangrid are owned by a Spanish company called Iberdrola that only cares about profit, not our community. Join us at our upcoming Fairport Townhall to learn more about our goal to
#ReplaceRGE
with a public utility.
The Monroe County Democratic majority was elected to do the people's business, and tomorrow's vote on a public power study is their first big test. The people want a future free from energy profiteering. Commission the study, get us the facts.
@CountyExecBello
we're coming!
Tonight’s Country Legislative meeting is so packed with supporters for public power they’ve been forced to open an overflow room. Monroe County residents want public power, they want the study to
#replaceRGE
!
And many more non-speaking supporters. Rochester is united in the call for the funding of an implementation study to replace RG&E with a public utility that works for all of us.
Wow, the board of directors of RG&E's parent company, Iberdrola, are currently in trial for electricity price fraud. Is this the kind of corporation we want running our local utility?
RG&E’s corporate owner has a history of lobbying against the fracking ban in NY and NY’s Landmark 2019 Climate Law. Let’s
#TakeBackRGE
and create a community owned utility that confronts the climate crisis, instead of accelerating it.
#ReplaceRGE
Students for a public power study! The UR Student Association, representing 6,000 Monroe County residents who are also stuck with RG&E, calls on the County Legislature to approve a public power study, calling it the “morally right thing to do.”
RG&E and its apologists want to keep us in the dark about public power by blocking a public utility study. We looked under the hood of a new corporate front group that's spreading misinformation to find out why they're afraid of us getting the facts.
Last night, the County Legislature voted to put corporate interests over those of the people.
@CountyExecBello
is largely responsible for this outcome. If he’d come out in favor of a study, the Dem majority would have passed it.
Instead he chose to carry water for RG&E (1/2)
Let's go through everyone on Rochester City Council and the Monroe County Legislature that has not told Metro Justice whether they will take the RG&E crisis seriously and commit to funding an implementation study for a public utility to replace RG&E.
Hey RG&E, is your parent company still backing New Yorkers 4 Affordable Energy, a corporate front group that has spent millions to undermine state climate law and slow a green energy transition? Sorry, do go on about your Earth Month fair…
We’re having a party and you’re invited! 🥳👨👩👧👦Join us at our free Community Fair, Friday, April 5, 4-7 p.m. at Washington Square Park in Rochester. There'll be fun for all, including free food 🍕, games. electrical demos, and live music 🎶 as we kick off Earth Month🌎.
It’s shameful that
@CountyExecBello
is actively lobbying against a public power study (and against a majority of his own Democratic Caucus in the Legislature) using RG&E’s invented numbers and talking points.
Let’s break down the misinformation here. A thread🧵
Thank you to our labor coalition partners who marched yesterday to urge
@CountyExecBello
@MichaelYudelson
&
@HowardMaffucci
to support a public power study! They represent 12,000+ workers who deserve a real answer to the question: is RG&E really the best we can do?
We need power for the people, by the people. With the NY Build Public Renewables Act, we will create:
✅Up to 51,000 new jobs
✅Enough renewable energy to power at least 75% of New York
🚫Corporate profits
Check the research: .
RG&E took over $100 million in profits from the region in 2022, and they use the money to lobby politicians to increase our rates. Let's replace them with a public utility that works for all of us. Join us next week!
RG&E's hearing impairment phone number went to scammers. The VP of cyber security for RG&E's parent company stated, " it takes events like this sometimes to bring it to our attention."🤨
RG&E is innovating new ways of being incompetent.
We are sharing our RG&E stories at our Town Hall for a Public Utility. We've heard of bills jumping from $200 to $800, estimates four times higher than the meter reading, and charging absolutely high for gas when people have oil heat!
We need your help! Rochester City Council unanimously approved funding for the study to
#ReplaceRGE
and now we need the County Legislature to follow suit. Join us for our upcoming canvass this Sunday to bring the campaign to the rest of the county!
Our last townhall with City Council Vice President
@marylupienroc
to discuss replacing RG&E with a public utility was a great success. Join our next one 12/19.
This one will have Rochester's At-Large Councilmembers. Join us:
The NY Build Public Renewables Act (NYBPRA) would make energy democracy and renewable power the standard throughout the state. Together with the NY Utility Democracy Act (NYUDA), it can bring the change our residents and planet need.
Dear 🤖:
RG&E makes us sick from their unethical behavior (illegal shut-off threats, surprise billing, no explanations, etc)
About a third of utilities are publicly or co-operatively owned, and studies show they're better run than investor-owned utilities!
RG&E's customer service & rates are out of control, but they're the only game in town. If you are interested in fighting back like Hannah, join the Rochester for Energy Democracy Campaign at to replace a corporate monopoly with a democratic public utility
RG&E is providing such terrible service that the Public Service Commission is launching yet another investigation into RG&E's practices. The PSC will be holding hearings in the Rochester area in January any RG&E customer can attend.
Public utilities are better at power outage management than private utilities like RG&E. Go to to sign our petition and learn more about how to replace RG&E with public non-profit utility.
"What about the taxes RG&E pays?" Dan Maloney of UAW 1097 absolutely demolished this bad faith talking point at yesterday's rally for public power.
@CountyExecBello
do you get it now?
RG&E's incompetence and failure to plan for our infrastructure has led to delays in the construction of a senior care center, 1,000 new housing units, and 250 jobs being put on hold.
@MichaelYudelson
, Henrietta deserves better. Let's
#ReplaceRGE
!
Join us at Rochester City Hall again 6/20 6pm.
A majority of City Council has said they support funding the implementation study to
#ReplaceRGE
, but we need your support to let them know we want the funding reserved in this year's annual budget.
“…Rochester Gas and Electric, known for not cutting tree limbs, resulting in power outages, and sending crazy bills like the one I got for $9,000. It provides such poor customer service that state regulators fined RG&E $6 million last year.”
Know where your representatives stand on a public utility to replace RG&E. Thank you for the wide support for energy democracy, but to all those who won't commit -- it's time to step up and listen to your constituents!
Today's post features city council members. (1/3)
Excellent pice in the
@DandC
on the camapign to
#replace
RG&E with a public utility.
"Julia Acosta never knows when she'll get a $2,000 utility bill in the mail ... 'Every month, we live in fear that they're going to cut our power,' Acosta said."
RG&E is terrified of the movement to
#ReplaceRGE
, join us Friday April 5th 5:30pm for the Rally for Public Power so we can win the study that will prove we need to
#takebackRGE
from its foreign parent companies.
Tuesday night the Monroe County Legislature voted against funding a study to replace RG&E with a local public utility. The few holdouts cited procedural concerns instead of offering real objections.
The campagin continues, read our full statement here:
Thank you again
@evandawson
and
@WXXINews
for having us on Connections this week to discuss replacing RG&E with a public utility.
The messages and calls to the show, illustrate Rochester is ready to replace RG&E with a public utility we control.
The People's Power March kicked off the Rochester for Energy Democracy (RED) campaign to replace RG&E with a public utility; it was an enormous success and our work is not over! Next RED meeting is next Wed, Oct 6th, 6pm. Join us!
The entire Democratic caucus supports studying replacing RG&E with a public utility except for Adam Bello and two lone holdouts. We're optimistic they'll come to their senses if people show up to the Mass Rally for a Public Utility *this Friday 5:30pm*!
The city's legal department is trying to block the study to replace RG&E, that's why on May 23 at 5:30 pm, Metro Justice will be holding a rally on the steps of City Hall to demand Mayor Malik Evans and County Executive Bello study public power now!
The Public Service Commission (PSC) has audited RG&E in the past and it hasn't improved their service, or lowered their prices.
Worth noting the customer service complaints and billing mistakes are cited as reasons for the audit.
#TakeBackRGE
#ReplaceRGE
Now why would RG&E be THIS afraid of a public power study? What do they think it will show?🤔 The public deserves facts, not corporation misdirection. Tell
@CountyExecBello
: Let's get the facts. Study public power now.
#replacerge
Fed up with RG&E? Tell the County Legislator and Rochester City Council that you support funding an implementation study to replace RG&E with a public utility!
Speak to County Legislature 2/14
Speak to Rochester City Council 2/16
RG&E will always try to increase rates since it's owned by a profit-driven conglomerate. We need a local democratic public utility in Rochester. Join RED
RG&E failed to connect light poles to the grid in a new neighborhood in Chili for over a year.
Why do they deserve to increase our delivery rates if they can't achieve the bare minimum?
#ReplaceRGE
#TakeBackRGE
The NY Public Service Commission is currently voting on RG&E's proposed rate increases. This is why we need to
#ReplaceRGE
, this is why everyone should come to our Public Power Townhall in Fairport on Oct 25th at Fairport Highschool at 6pm.
Legislator
@MichaelYudelson
, you said yourself that RG&E has failed this community. Your conditions were met. Are you ready to stand with the rest of the Democratic Caucus this Tuesday and vote for a public power study that will get us the facts to move forward?
We deserve a future in which we’re no longer beholden to a multinational company for our energy needs, and we’ll continue to fight for that future. Thank you to everyone who has testified, marched, emailed, shouted, and thank you to elected leaders willing to lead on this issue.
RG&E is raising rates. Again. This company makes $80 million a year in profits and they claim they need to raise rates for a "green transition". Trying to balance a green transition on the backs of poor and working class families is the antithesis of climate justice.
The Build Renewables Act is essential for ensuring our green transition is a just one. It will go a long way toward meeting our city and state climate goals.
@RocTenantUnion
@publicpowerny
@VOCALNewYork
The NY Build Public Renewables Act has now been introd in both the Assembly (
#A1466a
) & Senate (
#S6453
)
Call your reps today to have them cosponsor bringing 35,000 new jobs building out the 100% renewable, democratically controlled,
#PublicPower
we need!
We are proud to have taken part in last week’s public power conference. People from Maine to San Diego all demand utilities that place people’s needs over corporate profit!
Hundreds of people took to the streets yesterday to send a clear message to
@CountyExecBello
and undecided County legislators: We're sick of RG&E's failures and we're tired of excuses. Commission an independent public power study and get the facts so we can move forward together!
RG&E seems to be exclusively holding “community events” where there are no people.
Meanwhile Rochester for Energy Democracy (RED) and
@MetroJustice
are building a mass movement to
#ReplaceRGE
with public power. Tell your electeds to support RED today!
“I got my RG&E bill. Nobody’s living there, no cooking, nothing. They came in, the bill was $2,000,” she said.
So many stories at last night’s townhall, it’s clear Monroe County wants a study to
#ReplaceRGE
Join us Friday 9/24 to demand an elected locally controlled public utility to replace RG&E that will lead the way to affordable rates, a rapid green energy transition and good paying union jobs.
They would if they could.
Join us this Wednesday 6pm for a Townhall at Fairport Highschool to learn more about replacing RG&E with a locally owned public utility that works for all of us!
Metro Justice's Lead Organizer explains why it is so important that YOU join us *this Friday* 5:30pm at RG&E HQ at 180 S Clinton if you support a study to
#replaceRGE
with a public utility that works for all of us.
A public energy utility could be a game-changer for working people in Monroe County. That's why labor leaders are calling on County Executive Adam Bello to support a public power study. Tell Bello: don't be afraid of the facts! Study public power!
Many lawmakers are UNDECIDED or WON'T COMMIT to funding the implementation study to
#ReplaceRGE
.
Use our one-click tool to email them to tell them to stand with the community and not a multinational corporation draining resources from our region!
Avangrid owns RG&E in Rochester and CMP in Maine, both habitually send late, high, inaccurate bills and have awful service.
The solution here and in Maine is to boot the Avangrid monopoly and enact energy democracy in our utilities.
RG&E's monopoly on our energy system has gone on long enough.
We need an implementation study that guarantees inclusion of
@MetroJustice
's study questions. Tell our leaders we want to
#ReplaceRGE
now!
The NY Public Service Commission has fined and audited RG&E for years without any improvement. RG&E will never stop putting profits before people unless we
#ReplaceRGE
with a public utility.
Join us at the climate march tomorrow at 3pm:
The politicians below were initially supportive of siding with the community against RG&E, but they haven't committed to taking the *first step* of commissioning and funding a study to replace RG&E.
Write them today to make sure they stand up for us!
Know where your representatives stand on a public utility to replace RG&E. Thank you for the wide support for energy democracy, but to all those who won't commit -- it's time to step up and listen to your constituents!
Today's post features county legislators.
We all know RG&E takes forever to restore power after a storm, but did you know that they eventually charge you for those repairs, overtime hours, dry ice distribution, etc. by raising your rates? That's just one of the ways that
#RochesterGreedandExtortion
is ripping you off.
Groups around the world are marching for Climate Justice this Friday. Join the Rochester march Friday 3pm at City Hall.
RG&E and its parent corporation will always place profits over the climate, that's why we're fighting for a democratic public utility.

Rochester commissioned funds for a study to
#ReplaceRGE
in June and now it's the County Legislature's turn to step up.
Join us Nov 14th at 5:30 to demand a study now. Instructions on signing up to speak are in the link:
RG&E has "done an analysis" of what a public power study would cost and some electeds are repeating that number. Why should we take RG&E's word for it? They have everything to lose, and have shown they can't even get our bills right. Tell
@CountyExecBello
: study public power!
@david_andreatta
@solidaritti
@roccitynews
@WXXINews
This is untrue. We reached out in October personally to David to cover this fight, and he responded, "We discussed it and decided to take a pass." Since then, CITY has received several media advisories to cover the growing movement for a public utility, but never responded.
RG&E and NYSEG (both owned by Avangrid) have continually failed to connect new homes to the grid. There have been complaints to NYPSC since 2016(!) that RG&E has continually ignored and the problems are only getting worse.
People want facts, not fearmongering. RG&E must be getting desperate if they're resorting to scare tactics like this. Why are they afraid of a study, if they're the best option?
Monroe County residents have had enough of RG&E and we want our elected officials to study an alternative. We want facts, not fearmongering. Study public power now.
People across the country are waking up to the fact we need publicly owned utilities that place people over profit if we want to meaningfully confront the climate and cost of living crises.
Join us in the fight to
#ReplaceRGE
here in Monroe County!
"Citizens 4 Responsible Power" is a corporate front group whose members have opposed worker protections, wage increases, and a renewable energy transition. But they certainly do their part to support the misinformation economy through paid posts on social media!
RG&E and its apologists want to keep us in the dark about public power by blocking a public utility study. We looked under the hood of a new corporate front group that's spreading misinformation to find out why they're afraid of us getting the facts.
RG&E keeps saying they need to increase delivery rates by ~20% because want toinvest in local infrastructure.
We say that $$ should come from the over $100 million dollars(!) in profits they extract from the region a year. Not from local ratepayers!
RG&E is worried about our momentum and requesting individual meetings with City Council members to skirt open meeting laws.
Join our protest of RG&E's poor service and outrageous fees at City Hall this Monday, 11/21 12pm
County Legislature is packed again this month as we gather to ask them to fund the implementation study to explore replacing RG&E with a public utility that lowers rates, creates good union jobs and lowers pollution.
The NY Public Service Commission has fined RG&E many times for many years. NY State is not going to step in. We need the County Legislator, Rochester City Council, and others to work together to fund an implementation study to look into replacing RG&E with a public utility.
RG&E is tweeting, giving interviews, and writing opinion pieces on how increased prices are out of their control
Meanwhile, they're asking the NY Public Service Commission to allow them to increase customer delivery rates by 20%
Join us:
RG&E is fighting tooth and nail against providing basic service to our region. They use the excuse of staffing issues, but we cannot find any job listings for RG&E on multiple job sites.
We're on Connections with Evan Dawson today at 12 PM discuss issues with RG&E, a public utility as the solution, how we win, and the upcoming town hall for a public utility with our Rochester City Councilmembers At-Large!
