Please let’s say this loud; we are not political actors in our capacity as economists. Highly important especially if you have progressive views: collapsing them with the reputation of “untrustworthy experts” makes those ideas radioactive to the public
I highly encourage econ to not go down the road many parts of the sciences have gone down, being seen as political actors. People trust us on economic topics *because* we don't do things like this. (Also global individual level inequality has been falling straight for 35 yrs...)

Econ seminar culture is built on the assumption that the audience knows something that the speaker doesn't, and that the speaker values that information. A very important thing the audience knows and the speaker doesn't: Is the speaker making any sense at all? If nobody has any

Top 10% of earners cannot account for 50% of US consumption, because they get less than 40% of disposable income and they save more than other Americans. 👇👇
This graph has been floating around every couple months, arguing that the top 10% of earners account for 50% of consumption. Anyone familiar with economic statistics should intuitively feel it must not be right. So I dug into it a bit, and indeed, it's (mostly) not.

Got picked up by a Serbian bicycle taxi driver in Chicago. He looked me dead in the eye and said, “Antoine Griezmann?” I said no. He winked and said, “Nice try.” I guess I play for Atletico Madrid now.

On heterodox discourse: I don't believe I have ever seen an economist call themselves heterodox who didn't also have a strong political valence (right or left!) to their work. Otherwise it is just "new ideas". Any good counterexamples? 1/3

If only there was anything to learn from these weirdos, eh? Today we cheer, tomorrow we discuss industrial policy top-down, with green requirements, privacy regulations, and “social justice” objectives for startups maybe.
Congratulations to Philippe Aghion on receiving the Nobel Prize in economics. A proud moment for Europe and a strong reminder that innovation and openness are the foundations of our shared prosperity. Philippe’s contributions helped shape Mario Draghi’s vision for European

The Veneto Workers Histories (1975–2001) is probably the easiest-to-access population-level employer–employee dataset there is. I’ve put together a page with practical user tips beyond the sparse official docs. 1/3 🧵

Great paper by @Ale_M_Peter and @GidiBo conditionally accepted at American Economic Review. I agree with the paper of the year (though, admittedly I’m biased 🙃)
Allowing for quantity discounts completely flips the logic of misallocation from markups on its head. Firm-level misallocation is much lower, consumer misallocation is much higher, and the normal subsidies don’t work. Possibly paper of the year? 1/
