My latest for @jacobin looks at the way that, at different points over the years, AOC has sometimes dabbled in unhelpful identity politics and sometimes leaned into a broadly appealing class-focused message. If she runs for president, that second approach is the one we need.
Over the years, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been torn between different approaches to identity and class. She’s no stranger to a universalist approach that emphasizes economic inequality and common struggle. If she runs for president, that’s the ticket.

Gaat om het boek 'Furious Minds'. Een absolute aanrader inderdaad wil je de ontvlammende GOP burgeroorlog begrijpen, alsmede de ideologische strijd om de opvolging van Donald Trump.
"Vance, who speculated Trump might be America’s Hitler in 2016, quickly changed his mind when he realized those were just his principles talking, and if they stood in the way of his ambition..." Nice @MattPolProf review of Laura Field's great book on MAGA https://t.co/G4pS0erQ1L

The bottom line: the rise of the New Right wasn’t just political opportunism — it was rooted in an intellectual evolution that privileges ideological purity and power over facts, democratic norms, and pluralism.

To understand this troubling moment in American democracy, look at the history and making of the New Right.

To be fair, this has always been her message. From housing as a human right, to the Green New Deal, @AOC has always pitched a vision of a better life for working people. And importantly, she does it with hope and optimism. Hence her slogan: “A better world is possible.”
.@AOC's recent turn toward universalist messaging — uniting working people against oligarchs on the basis of shared material interests — is the approach that could defeat the Right. If she runs for president, that's the version of her we need: https://t.co/vN5M5LoG0d

We’ve reached a point where any mix of solutions to our nation’s economic problems is going to involve the wealthiest Americans contributing more.

There’s no getting around this if we want to avoid the deficit cliff ahead.

Also hard to think of a figure who more emphasized market values as a cause not just an effect of human decisions more than Marx. Some have read his entire theory as being about little else.

Lot of interesting things in Hayek's book, but as a reading of Marx this couldnt be much more wrong. In fact Marx had a very similar critique of Mill.
