🧵 UM researchers have used #AI to distinguish between four #RenalCancer subtypes. This tech has the potential to improve pre-surgical diagnosis and avoid unnecessary surgery. This excellent thread by @IzzyNewsham explains all 👇

Although Renal Cell Cancer (RCC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide, existing diagnostic strategies are unable to accurately differentiate malignant from benign small renal masses preoperatively. This results in 20% of patients undergoing unnecessary surgery. 2/10

I am extremely enthusiastic to share our work published today in @NatureGenet. We establish a targeted @nanopore sequencing approach for ultralong-read epigenomic profiling and discover a novel, primate-specific enhancer driving bi-allelic IGF2 expression.
