2 year-old Awaab Isaak died because the home he lived in was unfit for human habitation. His parents complained but were ignored. This is not a one-off. Thousands of families are living in awful conditions. This is just some what we’ve found in our 18 month investigation🧵1/16

@DanielHewittITV @itvnews Congratulations @DanielHewittITV and the rest of the team at ITV. This is our reality behind closed doors of the UK. Dismissed, not listened to or taken seriously. Fobbed off, passed from pillar to post and treated appalling. Thank you for giving the voiceless a voice.

We won Silver at the British Podcast awards for The Trapped! Our documentary series on the housing crisis. So proud of our little team, up against massive podcasts, loads of BBC productions and Audible. Thanks @itvnews for letting us make it and tell the story to a new audience.

A right and righteous contribution from @DanielHewittITV and team tonight. 40% of people with a learning disability who died in 2023 died avoidably. I mean WTAF?

Just watch Louis dancing and singing on this report. Utterly devastating and so blinking wrong. No inquest for Adrian either. How is that possible???

It’s so important to share awareness about what happens to learning disabled people. I fear an unnecessary death for my brother. So much bias (inc unconscious) and lack of understanding of the risks faced. Martha’s rule will help.

#Oliverscampaign Where is the shame, where is the outcry from all of us. Shouldn't we all be demanding better health and care for patients with a learning disability @wesstreeting @SKinnock @zubirahmed We must stop these avoidable deaths

Our investigation has also found NHS England is failing to meet its targets to carry out mandatory training for staff to reduce poor treatment and deaths of learning disabled people. All but 1 NHS region failed to reach the 30% target to complete Oliver McGowan training by 2025.

Some of the Hillsborough families have been to meet Keir Starmer this morning - they shared a hug on the steps of Downing Street. Clearly an emotional moment for them all ahead of the long-awaited Hillsborough Law being introduced to parliament:

The prime minister’s first choice to take over Angela Rayner’s housing and local government responsibilities was Ed Miliband, but he refused to leave energy and climate change. This appears to have been the one part of the reshuffle that didn’t quite go Starmer’s way. I discuss

Same with housing
Reshuffles happen from time to time in politics, I get it But the prospect of yet another spin on the Ministry of Justice leadership wheel is so dispiriting Justice is broken. It needs sustained & effective leaders Justice Sec can't always be a stepping stone to bigger things

I expect Rayner's replacement to be hit with pretty ferocious lobbying to remove or reduce post-Grenfell reforms to "get Britain building"

Housing is an area of govt in desperate need of stability after years of chop and change. Angela Rayner’s position before this week seemed to promise it, as DPM too Housing Sec wasn’t a stepping stone job. Pennycook is the obvious replacement, but whoever it is needs to stay put.
