Today I was asked “Why do you bother polishing your boots when they will only end up dirty again?” If you don’t bother to polish your boots, why would a patient ever believe that you wash your hands. Professionalism is not just what you say, but often the standards that you keep.
We need to stop explaining away the poor mental well-being across the ambulance workforce to simply ‘traumatic jobs’, and start having a serious conversation about the impact of constant and relentless performance measurement/management. From clocking on, to shift handover.
I’m excited to be joining the team
@StJohnAmbulance
as their new Priory Chief Paramedic Officer. As an organisation, full of so many committed and caring individuals, I look forward to all that we shall achieve over the coming years. Hope to meet as many
#StJohnPeople
as I can.
Devastated to hear the news that
@Ldn_Ambulance
#Paramedic
@Benkenten
has died. I had the privilege to have worked alongside Ben and his passion for what he did, his enthusiasm, and dedication to his colleagues was an inspiration to us all which drove us to be better.
A national register of public access defibrillators is all well and good, but what we need is, like fire extinguishers, a life saving defibrillator to be required in every public place/building across the UK. This change of law will save lives. Let’s make it happen. 🫀
We are regularly seeing UK ambulance services transport less than 50% of patients. Therefore, do they remain 'ambulance' services or have they evolved into something different? Is it time to embrace this change and seek more appropriate funding, governance and measurement?
After 10 years, my time at
@ParamedicsUK
is at its end. As Director, I worked alongside many who gave so much for the profession & those who are dependent upon it. 17,000 new members and I have never been more proud to call myself a
#Paramedic
. Thank you. You are all amazing!❤️
We shall look back on
#Covid19UK
and be ashamed that
#NHS
organisations adopted policy/guidance on the use of
#PPE
, not based upon evidence and expert consensus, but rather politically driven agendas and reputation guarding. Proud our professional body,
@ParamedicsUK
, is not one.
I'm utterly blown away to have just opened a letter from
@dahrlenetough
, informing me that I'm to receive a

#AHPSDay
! I could not be more honoured. It has been an amazing 10 years with the College, representing a truly amazing profession.

The best news I could of had for this Christmas in an otherwise rubbish year. I have a beautiful little girl on the way. 🥲 My wife is doing amazing continues to inspire me to be better every day. Roll on 2021 and new stories to write.
After taking some personal time away from all things profession and
@ParamedicsUK
related, I’m back under the spotlight as it’s vital that we get people talking about the unsustainable pressure healthcare professionals are under and how to better use the system.
@SkyNews
Social media ‘Top Tip’! Adding the phrase “My views are my own” or similar to your profile is pointless. You are just wasting characters. You will still be held to account by your regulatory body and employer for what you say. Think, type, think again.
@The_HCPC
@ParamedicsUK
Unfortunately this response was predictable. The
@theRCN
has been promoting the benefits of Nurses in more ‘non-traditional’ roles, however,
#AHPs
working in long-established nursing roles is not ok? This position and response is disappointing to see.
Increasingly ambulance services and A&Es are now being used to support the rest of the healthcare system.
That's holding up ambulances and
#Paramedics
that should be used elsewhere.
Maybe not necessarily following traditional models such as the very Doctor led services we have.
Max was my crewmate for a decade as I discovered how to be a Paramedic. He was infinitely kind, caring and understanding. He taught me how to be the best I could be, shared his wisdom, and supported many others. Like many, I'm heartbroken to have lost him. My colleague and friend
While I don’t believe this breaches the
@The_HCPC
Standards of conduct, performance and ethics, it falls into the often grey, but in my opinion far more important, realm of simply not being right or decent. Let’s engage and educate, but with professional modesty.

I have finished my article on the

The feeling you get when you spontaneously offer to demonstrate paediatric ALS in front of the 2nd year Student Paramedics in preparation for their upcoming Summative OSCE’s and forget to deliver 5 rescue breaths.

⭐️Evolving Scope of Practice
There are many Student Paramedics rapidly approaching graduation and registration
@The_HCPC
, who may be feeling apprehensive. This is normal. You are ready, you are prepared. This is just you recognising the importance and responsibility of what you will be undertaking.
#Ready
Thank you, to every member of staff, volunteer and Cadet, who gave their time helping ensure that everyone who took to the streets of
#London
to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II, were cared for and safe. I’m very proud of our family
@stjohnambulance
. You all were superb.
”Views are my own” does not indemnify you from both your employer and profession. You will still be held accountable by what you publish online, regardless if you acknowledge them or not within your profile. We need a better understanding of our professional ’online’ obligations.
We
@ParamedicsUK
are extending Fitness to Practise representation for members & launching a new package for the Student Membership. Now benefiting from specialist legal support in the event of a rejected application for registration with
@The_HCPC
when there is a case for appeal.
Halfway through my 24 hour clinical on-call shift for
@stjohnambulance
. I’m repeatedly reminded of the remarkable work our staff and volunteers do on a day-to-day basis, bringing high levels of care to those in need across the country. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Thank you!
This weekend, it’s the
@stjohnambulance
#StJohnLeaders
Conference. Listening to the stories of how St John has inspired our Cadets to reach for their aspirations and achieve. I wonder what percentage of healthcare providers started their journey with St John? Did yours?
Clinicians and educators from across the
#Paramedic
profession are meeting today to work on addressing the reported gap in education provision around community mental health care. Work being undertaken by
@NHSEngland
and
@ParamedicsUK
. How can we better prepare practitioners?
We
@ParamedicsUK
have had a busy week trying to represent the
#Paramedic
profession in the best way that we can across multiple media platforms. We passionately wish to represent our members, and all paramedics, honestly, professionally, and above all with integrity.
Yet another
@ParamedicsUK
member successfully represented by our partners
@BrabnersLLP
, resulting in no case to answer

I'm returning to
@ParamedicsUK
over the next few months to help support the amazing efforts of our professional body ensuring that the interests of members, who continue to go above and beyond daily, are protected, championed and we push for the support you need to remain safe.
Research should be freely available to all. Hiding knowledge that can improve patient care behind expensive firewalls is wrong. The
@ParamedicsUK
journal
@_theBPJ_
is free to all members and then free to all after 12 months.
Thank you to
@Will_Bellamy
for spending the time to undertake my Professional Discussion, as part of my clinical induction to
@stjohnambulance
. I’m really looking forward to meeting our volunteers out and about across England and the Islands.
#StJohnPeople
Major piece of work being undertaken by
@ParamedicsUK
, developing & upgrading our background administrative, IT and membership services. Aiming for a more user friendly website, and online resources. Plus NEW MEMBERSHIP CARDS! Not high-profile, but vital.
If a footballer can't score, then they need additional coaching, support and practice. We don't widen the goal. Perhaps something for all of us involved in education to reflect on?
I would argue with anyone that I have probably one of the best jobs in the world. Being there to support those joining a profession that I love and very proud of. There is nothing like it. There is however one minor exception. The marking! 😓
Thank you
@consultantpara
&
@Gerry_Egan
for your kind letter today. Over the last decade, helping to get
@ParamedicsUK
to where it is today has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I look forward to seeing where it goes next. Thank you both and everyone at the College.
This took years of work and dedication from so many. While some see this as a barrier, I still see this as guaranteeing everyone the opportunity to be a fully immersed and protected Student
#Paramedic
. Theory, balanced with high quality practice education, will always succeed.
We have increased the threshold level of qualification for entry to the Register (SET1) to degree level for Paramedics. Read our latest news article on our website to find out more and what this means for the profession going forward ➡️
In a time of recognition across the
#NHS
, let’s not forget those who continue their work, often silently in the background. Through effective infection prevention & control procedures, they are likely to save far more lives than you ever will in your career.
An intense day at
#ParaBoard
today. Lots of success and progress made but still lots to do. I hope members, and indeed the wider
#Paramedic
profession, know how passionate the
@ParamedicsUK
Trustees, staff and Executive are towards our amazing profession.

Reflecting on a busy year
@OBUParamedic
which saw our first BSc graduates & outstanding patient care demonstrated by

in developing & promoting the

profession. Now let’s work towards another major step.
Also, if we want more people to engage with and incorporate research, it needs to be written in a way that the layperson on the street can understand. Not the academic snobbery we often see. We need to make research more accessible and not behind expensive journal subscriptions.
Lively debate between
@georgette_eaton
and
@eddlecanard
- "academics do the research they want, to get their names on publications; not the research needed by the service or patients!"

Today I'm visiting
@UniofGreenwich
and fellow

I've had the privilege of working with
@HealthRegLawyer
for over 4 years now, striving to provide

It’s the very first
#InternationalParamedicsDay
. Today,
#Paramedics
are working in more places than ever before. Wherever you are, please try and find the time to reflect on your journey and remember the contributions you make on a daily basis really matter to those around you.
A big thank you to all those clinicians, call handlers, managers, and support workers who are working over the festive period. Your compassion and dedication make the profession what it is. Proud and on call for
@ParamedicsUK
over the next few days and hope everyone keeps safe.🎄
Reflecting on the news of a colleague who today lost their fight against cancer. My mentor when I first started as a Paramedic, a good friend who had a passion for knowledge and the care of others. I hope I can pass on what he taught me and many others to the next generation.
“Huge rise in patients dying before they get to A&E - Mirror Online”. Not keen on the headline, but I hope members feel that I got some key points across from
@ParamedicsUK
and about compassionate palliative and end-of-life care in the community.
We keep pressing the importance of people being aware of and following the guidelines/restrictions, which is key to keeping people safe and protecting our precious health & social care resources. Stop clapping hands, start washing hands.
@ParamedicsUK
A really positive day
@ParamedicsUK
. Discussing what we need our new website and digital membership services to do. What would you like the new College site to provide for you? What can it do better?
My specialist knowledge is not good enough to add anything new to the intubation and wider airway management discussion. However, what I do believe is that it is continuing to draw our attention away from the things that make the biggest difference in resuscitation care.
Thank you to everyone across our
@stjohnambulance
family who have worked to bring our ePRF project to the point where we are starting to roll out devices for operational use. Our partners
@docworksuk
have helped us produce something that will bring real quality improvements. 🙏
