I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

The social contract is broken
What not many people realise about UK student loans is that earners in the middle of the salary range end up paying back far more than either lower or higher earners, as they earn enough to pay the loan and interest back before the 30 year cut off, but not enough to pay it off

University degrees are not all about salaries. They are about learning to think differently and more carefully. Dispiriting discussion on bbc politics live which focussed entirely on earnings. Ok the financing is v important but the aim is not just a high paid job.

Anyone else noticed that their daily feed is rapidly filling with anti democratic, unpatriotic, anti British nonsense? Maybe it's just me, but this platform seems increasingly full of human ugliness.

The real weakness of the BBC, as exemplified by recent events, is its failure to stand up to ludicrous claims from the right that it is somehow hugely biased to the left. Listening to Telegraph journalists bleat about a biased BBC, or Reform MPs enjoying more platforming than any

The irony meter just broke. The BBC isn't perfect, but it's one of the few things standing between our British values and a Trump-style takeover of our politics.
