Completed this landscape this evening. Scene near Coleraine, SW-Victoria, not far from where l grew up. This one is for my display at the annual Horsham Rotary Art Show this October. Oil on canvas 65 x 50cm.

Painting l did in 2015. Siemans-Schuckert D.IV of German WW1 ace Max Ernst 1918. Ernst survived the Great War with 62 Allied aircraft to his credit. Acrylic on paper 42 x 29cm

The film portrayed the Cabanatuan Raid Jan 1945, a mission by US Army Rangers to rescue Allied POWs. A P-61 Black Widow made a series of low passes to distract Japanese guards while the Rangers approached. No flying P-61 was available for the film so the Hudson played the role.

The 2005 film ‘The Great Raid’, set in the Philippines during WW2 but filmed in Australia, featured a Lockheed Hudson in one scene. The Hudson, a former RAAF example, is now owned by Temora aviation museum in NSW, Australia.

2/2: -of the picture can be seen a vertical mark. This was a tear in the canvas caused by a piece of shrapnel. Just after Wootton completed the painting, the airfield was raided by the Luftwaffe, a small bomb splinter piercing the canvas while Wootton sheltered in a trench.

Hawker’s death marked the loss of the air supremacy the British had achieved over the Somme Front since the breaking of the ‘Fokker Scourge’ the previous June. The rise of the Jasta ‘flying circuses’ would give the edge back to the Germans, culminating in ‘Bloody April’ in 1917.

Hawker was MvR’s 11th victory. MvR’s weapons were overheated and about to jam but he fired one final burst at maximum range as Hawker made a break for the Allied lines. Hawker was hit in the head, killing him instantly.
