Thirty-four states have fully recovered from the job loss they suffered during the pandemic and pandemic-related shutdowns, but Michigan is not one of them. The recent repeal of the state’s right-to-work law is likely to make that situation worse.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has pledged to do something about the costs that Michigan residents face. What she’s done doesn’t fit her comments, though. The governor hands out favors to some people and does nothing but raise taxes on everyone else.
In the 1800s, Michigan nearly went bankrupt because its main economic strategy was one of subsidies, rent-seeking and favoritism. Men and women of principle turned things around, leading to an age of entrepreneurship. But today, history repeats itself.
Michigan needs more jobs. But spending billions of dollars for a tiny number of jobs in one industry is a terrible plan, with almost no return on investment for taxpayers.
The growing environmental costs of the forced transition to electric vehicles are becoming clear. Unfortunately, these costs are only the tip of the iceberg. The human costs of reworking global transportation options are proving to be much more worrisome.
