March Madness is huge at Butler University - but the most popular figure on campus can't shoot and won't jump. Though he has been known to dribble...
Dean Reynolds introduces us.
I’m getting a kidney!
Transplant confirmed for Jan. 9. My brother is the donor.
I don’t have the words to articulate how grateful I am to my bro, to everyone who selflessly stepped up to donate, to those lifting me up in prayer, and to my medical staff. Thank you! God is good.
Fans chanting "Michael, Michael" in honor of the very much loved
@ButlerBlue3
handler
@MSKaltenmark
during an emotional final night at Hinkle with the equally loved Trip. Well done and THANK YOU both!
#OneLastTrip
My creatinine level is normal! Checking in at 1.17 today which is the best kidney function I’ve had in nearly two decades. I cried happy tears.
I should get unhooked from all of my tubes today and discharged tomorrow.
My brother is doing well too and on the mend.
God is good!
I’m all checked in, on standby with my special
@ButlerBlue3
kidney blanket, and just waiting for my turn in the OR. My brother has already been called in. It’s go time! Prayers up.
#kidneytransplant
Rough evening post-op, but good night of rest.
Kidney function improving. Starting to feel better and ready to celebrate this
#KidneyTransplant
and my 40th birthday with friends, family, and medical staff today.
All glory to God.

I am excited to share that I’ve accepted a position as head of marketing for
@IMS
. It was an emotionally difficult decision to leave
@butleru
after 19 years, but also an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I’m fortunate to go from one dream job to next, across organizations I love.
Homeward bound with a few final thoughts:
Modern medicine is amazing.
My medical team was stellar.
You all have been so encouraging.
My wife is a saint.
My friends & family are the best.
My brother is my hero.
And our God is awesome!

One more go-around together until I’m sidelined for a bit. New kidney scheduled for Thursday (1/9). I’ll let
@EvanKrauss523
take it from here and will be watching for this goofy mug on TV.

The Dawgs pick up a road win on my birthday as I’m breaking in a new kidney, and I’m in my hospital room feeling like Wilbur “Shooter” Flatch from the movie Hoosiers.
It’s been a great day. Thanks be to God!
Safe travels home,
@ButlerMBB
. Good night and
#GoDawgs
!
I had thought that last night’s ceremony would have made me an emotional mess. Turns out, I was too distracted orchestrating the proceedings to get in the moment. More than anything, I was just feeling a sense of joy; for how far we’ve come, and to have my family by my side.
Praising God today for a clear biopsy! My creatinine jumped a little last week, so yesterday docs biopsied my new kidney for signs of rejection. Spent the afternoon on my back. All worth it for the great results. Feeling great and carrying on.
#kidneytransplant
And that’s a wrap on 16 years of holding Butler Blue’s leash. It’s been an honor and a privilege. All credit and love to good boys, BB2 & BB3.
Ready to support
@EvanKrauss523
&
@TheButlerBlue
as we take this program to even higher.

As mascot, I sought to bring joy to the Butler Community and all whom I met. Today, as I retire, I wish I could do that now more than ever. I sense we could use some joy right now. Even in retirement, I’ll try.
For now, thanks for everything,
@butleru

I observed lunch by taking a couple laps around my floor and I’m now upright in my chair. Got to have 60 ml of Sprite for my “birthday cake” too!
Still improving and hoping to visit with my brother soon. He’s also doing very well. We thank you for your prayers.
#kidneytransplant
Felt SO good to run the old boy last night. Docs said I could begin light jogging at 8 weeks post-op. That’s not until this coming a Thurs. Close enough. Couldn’t pass up this opportunity. Thanking God & brother Doug for this. Can’t wait to lace ‘em up for real this week.
It was a day to remember, that’s for sure.
Slept hard last night and into the morning, even with doctors and nurses poking on me.
Kidney function is better than it’s been in 18 years and still improving.
Please pray for my brother as his body adjusts to everything.
They say that time flies when you’re having fun. I suppose that’s why 8 years has passed in a blink of an eye. Tonight marks our last game working together at

The comeback starts today! I didn’t set any speed records, but I did get outside for some fresh air and a 20 minute walk. And eventually, I know that walk will again be a run. Gives me hope that I can get back to doing what I love.

Trip will long be remembered for his spirit & passion. He reveled in his work & relished the limelight, taking great pride in his role as mascot.
Our fam is so grateful for all who loved and cared for him. We remember him fondly, while celebrating his spirited service to Butler.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved retired mascot, Butler Blue III, aka “Trip,” at the age of 12 after a brief illness. Trip’s jersey and portrait will be displayed in Atherton Union from Monday, April 8, through Sunday, April 14.
Brother Doug is headed home, but I’m keeping a piece of him with me. I’ve always looked up to these guys, but now more than ever.
I’ll be out of here tomorrow as well. Can’t wait!
#kidneytransplant
The first pic alone represents so much: joy, thrill, a comeback story.
But the collection of photos tells the bigger story: the end of an era.
Of all the cool things that dog and I do, our nights in Hinkle and a run for the bone are the most cherished; and now behind us. 1/2
UPDATE:
I think we broke the system.
Overwhelming is the perfect word. And THANK YOU will never be enough.
We’ll find this match!

If not, hopefully more info to come. Also, Living Donor Coordinator is a resource: 317-944-4370
It’s wasn’t my best
#IndyMini
outing, but that’s not what today was about. Nonetheless, it was still decent run for having a pair of failing kidneys.
This one is for all the people who have shown me so much love this week. You all kept me moving today.
Just trying to earn it.
Good boy, Blue! And job well done. Rest easy, pup.
We miss you so much and we’re so sorry. We love you dearly and always will. Give our best to Bluey and all our loved ones up there. I can’t wait to run with you again one day.
Always and forever, Go Dawgs!
A year ago today (1/9/2020), my brother and I showed up to the hospital well before dawn and by afternoon, his kidney was functioning in my body. That evening was rough, but the next day I felt great and I’ve been pushing forward ever since. Modern medicine is truly amazing.
1. Time flies.
2. Really wish I could do right by Trip on Sat. and pick him up to present him to the crowd like this, but I did get sliced open a few weeks ago.
3. Good news is, I got clearance to be in attendance. I’ll be there!
4. This is gonna hurt. 💔

A very special

for our first Changing of the Collar Ceremony w/ BB2 & me on 3/9/13. Now, after 7 years, just a couple more days remain until we do it again w/
@thebutlerblue
. While I can’t say that I’m ready to hang it up, I can most definitely say that’s been quite a ride.
Felt so good to be back in the old barn w/ my immediate family & my
@butleru
family. And to witness another milestone for our live mascot program made me me so proud. Not to mention, that gritty overtime victory was just the cherry on top of a fantastic night.

@zjbphotography
Not yet 8 weeks post-op (Thursday), but I just couldn’t wait any longer to get my first official run. It wasn’t easy, but still felt amazing just to be out there.
Dedicating this first one back to my brother Doug. I can’t wait to see how fast I can make his kidney go.
You’ll laugh. You’ll cry (a lot). But so worth the watch. Thank you,
@EvanKrauss523
for the labor of love to pull this piece together.
And thank you, Butler fam, for loving our boy. We’ll miss him forever. Damn good Dawg!
The GOAT was born 15 years ago today in Lizton, Indiana. He went on to become
@butleru
’s beloved mascot for nine years, and after consecutive
#FinalFour
appearances, he became America’s Dawg.
Rest easy, Butler Blue II. Thanks for everything.
#GoDawgs
On this date 16 years ago (3/27/2004), Butler Blue II was born. Such a good boy.
Instead of thinking about how we were supposed to be beachside on 30A today, I’m going to think more about this guy.
#GoDawgs
This just warms my heart.
I’m told that when Trip saw that it was his brothers holding the bone, he didn’t come in as hot as he normally does. And in fact, he was reluctant to take it from them. No doubt because he knows he’s not supposed to touch their stuff. 🤣.
Good boys!
Since Pops is recovering from a kidney transplant and isn’t cleared yet to return to
@butlermbb
games, I enlisted the help of my kid brothers, to hold my bone at last night’s game. I’d say they did a pretty good job.

Celebrating 17 years of marriage with

today, and amidst one of the weirdest, yet our most exciting years yet. I love this woman, and thank God for bringing us together and keeping us together all this time.
Happy Anniversary, Tiffany!
Six years ago today,
@TLKaltenmark
said our goodbyes to the best boy, Butler Blue II.
The thought of that moment still hurts my heart, but I also can’t think of that old boy and not smile.
That Dawg gave me so much.
To the GOAT...☝🏼

I know nothing about hockey, but I’m here for this. The Hurricanes had two goalies get injured and had to bring in an emergency backup goalie: a 42-year-old Zamboni driver. He played 28 mins, made 8 saves and won.
My favorite part: The guy is a kidney transplant recipient.
David Ayres earned the celebration after the 42-year-old Zamboni driver was pressed into action as the Hurricanes’ emergency backup goalie and got the win! 😯🔥

After a 2-year hiatus (kidney, Covid, etc.), I finally got back to

. Felt so good and fun to take “Doug” the kidney out for its first tri. Glory to God for delivering me here. Excited for more.
A few additional thoughts on my kidney transplant situation.
There’s so much more to say, but this captures the essence.
Time now to be patient and let the transplant center do their work to find the best match. And because of everyone that has stepped up, it’s gonna happen!
Please lift
@NikkiWZPL
up in your prayers today. She wasn’t my match but she stayed in the game to save the life of a complete stranger. Why? Because she could. Altruism at its best. God bless you, Nikki!

Sleepless night, pain around incision has increased, and I discovered that it hurts to sneeze, but still feeling pretty good.
Creatinine dropped again to 1.08! Anti-rejection levels holding steady.
Finishing up some education and Rx consult this morning and then headed home!
One year ago today I put out a call for help. A year later, I logged a six-mile run fueled by my brother’s kidney and the thought of all who came forward to help me. I’ll forever be grateful for the selfless and generous outpouring of support. Thank you!

It’s been just 8 years since we said our last goodbyes, but it feels like a lifetime ago.
And while I still cry when I watch this tribute, I smile a lot too. I miss him dearly.
Here’s to you, Blue II!
It’s a honor to have
@GreggDoyelStar
pen this story. Such a great read. Lots of emotions. Plenty of thoughts rattling in my brain.
However, I just want to emphasize one key aspect, “Not leaving, either. Kaltenmark isn’t retiring from Butler, just from the live mascot program...”
Family dog broke the news. Moving this summer. Will sure miss the unique experience of living on campus, but ready for the next chapter. My work commute stands to significantly increase if this work from home thing ever ends.
Well, my impending retirement from mascot duties also comes w/ a move off campus. My fam & I are soon headed to the north side of Indy in a new home, complete w/ a custom-built Dawg House just for me!

Day 8 of avoiding people other than our immediate pack. Grateful for a break in the rain and spring-like temps so that we can venture out for a bit. Moments like this (a walk, fresh air, good health) we once took for granted. Now, they’re most coveted.
Celebrated another *trip* around the sun for this guy today. Hard to believe he’s already 8 years old and approaching retirement. Time flies, but the old boy hasn’t lost a step.

On this day (July 23) in 1996, I started dating this girl from a neighboring high school. We met at the county fair a few weeks prior. I got her number. And 22 years later I’m still pursuing her heart.
Day 17 of staying at home and the tropical weather in Indy is most welcomed. Feels good for many reasons.
Also, I’m pleased to share that

ditched the training wheels just two days ago and today rode 4 miles!
When I put out the call for kidney donation, I prayed that not only would I find a match, but that someone who came forward for me and wasn’t a match would continue on to be an altruistic donor for someone else. Well, it’s happening!!!

It’s been a minute since our last home build update and since then, we’re starting to see colors, cabinets, landscaping, and more! We’re quickly approaching a mid-July move and the anticipation grows with each new installation.
We can’t wait!
Between just feeling really good and the spring-like weather, I couldn’t help myself. Not one, but two walks today totaling nearly 6 miles, and I enjoyed every step.
Came home just 3 weeks ago, but still several weeks yet before I’m allowed to run. Can’t wait!

When I was a kid, my mom used to read Bible parables to me. My favorite story was the one about the paralyzed man who’s friends not only took him to see Jesus to be healed, but went to the trouble of lowering him through a roof just to get around the crowds. (Luke 5:17-26)

I couldn’t even be mad at him.
I did eventually have to drag him off the field though.
And now that he knows that there are magic water sprayers that come out of the ground at the baseball field, he’s going to try to pull me over there any chance he gets.
