So excited to see this out! Aerated environments can be major sources of methane. This is due to the activities of aerotolerant methanogens. In the process, we show unexpected feedbacks between pollution and climate change. @ning_hall @MBiogeochem

Methanogenesis is classically thought to be limited to strictly anoxic environments. While oxygenated oceans are a known methane source, it is argued that methanogenesis is driven by methylphosphon...

Sharing our new manuscript in @ISMEJournal led by Dr @TessFHutchinson and @MBiogeochem. By tracking how the carbon in glucose is broken down in samples and isolates, she definitely shows fermentation dominates in sands, anaerobic respiration in muds.

Abstract. In marine sediments, microbial degradation of organic matter under anoxic conditions is generally thought to proceed through fermentation to vola

Utrecht University @UniUtrecht in the Netherlands has withdrawn itself from the World University ranking @THEworldunirank provided by @timeshighered. As this has generated quite some reactions - praise, questions, some doubts, I want to provide some context. Hence a thread 🧵1/16

Important note to the Australian federal government regarding the safeguard mechanism.
There is a big problem today where countries and large companies are investing in forests and soil carbon to offset their fossil CO2 emissions. This fundamentally does not work from a physical climate perspective, and threatens to undermine net-zero targets. A thread: 1/12

Our latest paper. Nitrate rich groundwater stimulates phytoplankton production but not secondary production in an estuary. Environmental flows stimulate both including Black Bream larvae. Great collaboration across biogeochemistry/ecology

Very important thread. The 'we don't have enough raw material for renewables' line is being repeated a lot.
Have others told you there are not enough raw materials to transition to 100% renewables? Did they say minerals are the new oil? Maybe they believed @SimonMichaux of @GTK_FI? If so, please explain to them they were fooled, by showing them this thread.

Scientific productivity is stagnating: we get less innovation per dollar of R&D. One reason is risk aversion: we fund incremental projects & established researchers. @patrickc & @heidilwilliams_ make the case for faster, curiosity-driven research.
wsj.com
Institutions that fund science have become process-oriented and risk-averse, favoring established researchers pursuing incremental discoveries, some critics say.

Important paper. Need to consider fugitive emissions of nitrogen if ammonia is used in significant quantities as a fuel - e.g., shipping.
More and more interest in ammonia as carbon-free fuel but is it a good idea? May solve one problem (CO2) by creating a new one (N2O+other N emissions). N2O may cancel ammonia's climate benefit. Other N damages nature. https://t.co/1wWVvuovkP
