Why are unhoused people expected to carry around vouchers? And have it and their personal documents repeatedly replaced? Can't it all just be captured and maintained electronically? @CivilRightsNM @OneABQVolunteer @HR_Board @MayorKeller

People who use drugs are more likely to experience housing difficulties due to criminalisation and social exclusion. That’s why we must: ➡️Guarantee the right to housing; ➡️Eliminate criminalisation of persons living in homelessness. Read more: https://t.co/neGHR2rnNw

This ain't Texas. Literally. If you removed TX and every other Deep South state from the U.S.'s incarceration rates (as we did in this gif), the U.S. would still have an incarceration rate many times higher than other democracies, including those with higher rates of crime.

Universal basic income is cheaper than this. In the Namibia UBI pilot, crime dropped by over 40%. It's amazing the amount of money governments will spend downstream instead of just giving someone $108 upstream to spend themselves on food and clothing.

This country is in the midst of a massive housing crisis. Millions of people are spending more than 50% of their limited income on rent. More than 650K people are homeless. Enough is enough. Affordable housing is a human right.

We often think about the cost & cruelty of mass criminalization in terms of length of jail & prison sentences. An important reminder that a single police interaction, a single stop & frisk, a single arrest alone is deeply violent & traumatic, & can change the course of a life.

Your daily reminder: Jail & prison does not deter crime. Jail & prison is criminogenic. Jail & prison increases recidivism. Jail & prison is violent. Jail & prison creates violence. Jail & prison decreases public safety. Invest in community health to prevent harm.

It’s 💔 to me that we lock up juveniles as adults & years in, often decades… and they still do not have a GED, diploma, or even a trade to no fault of their own… The school to stay in prison pipeline is very real!

ICYMI: In January, we @DrugPolicyOrg developed a helpful resource for communities on public health responses to address public suffering. Please read and share widely! https://t.co/RELHTTXqn5

We’re all concerned about public suffering and want real solutions. In order to arrive at the right ones, we must first truly understand the problem.

How copaganda works. Police, prosecutor, & prison interests use media to exaggerate & lie about "sensational" cases. Amplify them on repeat. Create the *perception* that "crime" or "migrants" are a "Crisis!" Perpetual anger/fear buys votes & public opinion. Facts be damned.

What if all education was free? What if healthcare was a given? What if, on top of all that, everyone received a basic income that covered the essentials? We'd have a society where everyone can truly choose their path. UBI isn't an expense; it's an investment in human potential.
