Big news! 🎉
Language for decriminalizing paraphernalia & residue, syringe service provider access, & to get rid of syringe counts for pharmacists was adopted during conference committee!

Spanish is not the only language Latinx people speak. Colonizer languages: Spanish, Portuguese, English. But also Creole and many Indigenous languages that are constantly trying to be erased but still spoken.
I think some folks may be confused when they hear that Stillwater is without air condition, if they’re unaware.
It isn’t out. There just is not A/C in the units, period. It is being reported as a “claim”, but it is a fact.
From a Star Trib article in 2014:
Since 7am, the B East unit of Stillwater Correctional Facility has been protesting their unfair treatment.
Because of staffing issues, the facilty has kept everyone on lockdown. No recreation. No showers. No ice. No phone calls. And, it’s 100 degrees.

I get the comparison of safe consumption sites to bars in the fact that it is hypocritical to support public spaces for alcohol & not other substances.
But as somebody who has been sexually assaulted & harassed in bars, calling them safe feels off.
SCSs can be SAFER than bars.

Whenever I check NextDoor, multiple people heavily imply that since it is illegal for cats & dogs to be off leash that they’d harm or kill other peoples’ pets if they came into their yards. So I think mine is just full of a lot of hateful people overall.

Speaking of movies shown in addiction treatment programs, I am seeing counselors recommend showing “Painkiller” in group to clients.
The amount of misinformation and anti-opioid propaganda the addiction treatment industrial complex is wild.
The brain disease theory or “hijacked brain” has impacted prescribing controlled substances as well.
It is also the same type of narrative used to claim chronic pain patients & people who use drugs could never self-advocate, are drug seekers, et al.

@hunt4change
You had SWers replying that you were using the phrase of incels vs the language used to discuss access to sex work. Then compared it to healthcare. Other survivors, including myself, are finding it disturbing because of how “right to sex” is weaponized. And it is dangerous.
Even the addiction treatment industrial complex takes on that label when they still do urinalyses, deny medications, collaborate with the criminal legal system, kick people out, etc. to maintain control. While actively lobbying against policies that benefit PWUD 💰 4/5

China is a major driver of the fentanyl crisis our nation is facing, and I’m pushing the Biden Administration to do more to hold them accountable.
This is not a Democratic crisis or a Republican one – and we’ve got to do everything in our power to keep Americans safe.
The fear that people who use drugs have around technology, surveillance & policing needs to be taken more seriously when providing harm reduction services. It is legitimate.
Reproductive rights advocates warn against apps. This should be a convo regarding tech & drug use too.
Stop making movies that feature abusive parents and “tough love” while severely stereotyping PWUD.
It’s contributing to stigma and plays into anti-opioid propaganda too. They’d never feature methadone or buprenorphine, but Vivitrol (with high OD risk that goes unnamed) is fine.

This is the same rhetoric that has harmed thousands of pain patients. It’s the healthcare industrial complex and the politicians who don’t listen to actual evidence that make it harder and harder to get prescriptions for controlled substances. Not people who use it unprescribed.
“Addiction doesn’t discriminate” is very “all lives matter”.
Rarely a mention of race rate disparities in overdose death for Black and Indigenous peoples, racist prescribing bias, the War on Drugs, & everything else due to systemic racism that disproportionately impacts BIPOC.

The “moving beyond harm reduction” resonates a lot. Harm reduction has been white-washed. But now more than ever being co-opted by systems that put out the most sanitized form. “Harm reduction” sits along groups putting out misinfo that is deadly for people who use drugs 2/5
If you really think you don’t know any (or many) people who use stigmatized drugs or do sex work...

@potato_heiress
I was fired immediately after filing my accommodations. Ended up filing with EEOC. But that didn’t help me immediately while being unemployed and disabled with my rent and bills to pay 🥲
I want to try something. It’s how I opened “Let’s Talk About: Harm Reduction” discussion on campus last year. I keep seeing “harm reduction” attached to a lot of things.
I can answer. But want to get a few RTs and responses first.
What does HARM REDUCTION mean to you?
How deeply racist the addiction treatment industrial complex is in general, but also in MN specifically, needs to be a topic with “access”. The MN Model of abstinence, force, 12-step was created by & for white men. It is entrenched in the War on Drugs—policing and prisons.
Work was skipped to dismantle racist institutions like policing. It’s being integrated into medical systems that have harmed PWUD and will continue to be racist even without stigma trainings for PWUD. If it involves at least naloxone, it gets a “harm reduction” label. 3/5
Oh wow. It’s almost like the people impacted by attacks on opioids and the experts who listened to them + acknowledge the connection with the War on Drugs predicted this would happen! And that it would impact other rx controlled substances with help from the DEA! 😒
This.
It is also why I’m not the biggest fan of pushing HR with
#DeadPeopleDontRecover
.
When all drug use isn’t addiction, it reinforces to people that the main goal is recovery, often abstinence as the end goal.
Goal setting is personal and should be done without coercion.
Unfortunate effect of ‘harm reduction’ becoming a buzzword are substance use programs saying they “practice harm reduction” but what they really mean is they “don’t force you to immediately abstain but rather allow you more time to achieve the required goal of sobriety.”
If you don’t believe that people who use drugs & chronic pain patients have their own voices on anti-opioid policies that have & will directly impact them…
That says a lot about not only those policies, but what you really think of the people you’re claiming to advocate for.

Have most people forgotten the history of harm reduction in the United States?

I was with a group who looked into this into 2019. We were told this & that police could retaliate.
As far as drug policy & Frey go, it is absolutely ridiculous he will do lowest level priority for entheogens… But wants to address overdose by INCREASING police funding.

Regarding Mpls's "POLICE THE TRAINS" discourse: I wish folks complaining that they have to see poor, homeless, in crisis, or addicted people on public transit could offer an alternative for where those people should go in a freezing cold city that criminalizes their existence
Harm reduction should include abolition.

Sickening. I fear for my Jewish family members of color every day when there are real credible threats (white nationalists) openly walking around… But false claims like this take away from others taking legitimate antisemitic threats seriously. Vile and dangerous anti-Blackness.
So tired of talk shows that have people on to talk about the “opioid epidemic”, and it is still only about the Sacklers...
Overdoses are rising, disproportionately in communities of color, and pain patients still don’t have access to opioids for pain management.

Been talking to other POC feeling the same way… Seriously considering removing myself from the larger (predominantly white) harm reduction community. Especially on social media.
Racism and abuse will never have a place in harm reduction. Neither will staying silent about it.
