The state has for decades, over numerous initiatives, attempted to battle its literacy crisis by adopting the science of reading.

ICYMI Episode #9. The system that allowed @LucyCalkins @FountasPinnell and @HeinemannPub to deliver faulty products for decades was fueled by a lack of knowledge about #SOR and how brains learn to read by many colleges of education. @apmreports
There's a new episode of Sold a Story available now (Episode 9: The Aftermath). Also - did you know we now have Sold a Story en español? https://t.co/6NsNg0sN09

“At least 79% of school districts surveyed by @WisconsinDPI in 2021 said they use a curriculum that is either not rated or is negatively rated by EdReports. About 80% of school districts participated in the survey.” Striking stat in @danielle_duclos’s coverage of today’s

@LeslieLaud @BoksnerJudy @jillbarshay So, does this mean that buying a “knowledge building” program will be the answer? Mandates to purchase a “curriculum” will fall flat. I am all for building knowledge with complex texts. The rush to BUY the magic box will only make publishers (and influencers) $$$$.

Thankfully districts that support teachers as experts instead of forcing curriculum with fidelity won’t face this but 🚨🚨🚨 there is no time for novels in bloated basals unless the teacher makes time and that’s a problem.
I recently spoke with a Brooklyn mom leading a parent-led effort to push Into Reading out of its school. She is also a former teacher. Two highlights from the conversation: "My fifth grade daughter hasn’t read a book yet this year." (As of March!)

This is the egregious, slow-burn prequel to #SoldAStory. Everyone, regardless of pedagogical orientation/politics/place should be outraged by the abuse of power & dereliction of basic ethical standards in carrying out & disseminating publicly funded research for the greater good.
Perhaps the coolest thing I have ever done as a podcaster is interview Linda Carnine, Susie Andrist, and Jerry Silbert, three educators who were in their 20s when Direct Instruction beat all the inquiry and self-esteem models in Project Follow Through. https://t.co/YeAads6ZBE

Districts have been marketed to. States have been bought with the deep pockets of companies who care only about the $$.
Publishers are filling programs full of "stuff" to satisfy @EdReports evaluators and all the interests groups who want "their thing" in the kit. You are becoming the beast you were trying to slay. Got these curricula out here lookin like Sherman Klump in the Nutty Professor↓

Poor readers often have a comprehension problem *because* of their decoding problems. Students can’t comprehend text they can’t decode. We should not be surprised that this then turns into low motivation to read.
''They’re then labelled with a ‘comprehension problem’ when they actually have a decoding problem.” (@spelling_thing )

@katyisd_ELEMCI this transition required experts at the helm to educate you, coaches and staff for the LONG HAUL and it should include MTSS, a detailed plan and DATA.

If @KatyLiteracy was in charge of this transition to #SOR #structuredliteracy it wouldn’t be such a half-€$$ed SS. But we aren’t so…..0 plan and wasting millions on a crappy curriculum with bandaid PD it is….. @katyisd_ELEMCI You need experts for crying out loud. @HMHCo

“Why are these kindergarteners essentially spending 30 minutes of their day rolling around on the floor looking at AA books? It doesn’t seem like the best use of their time.” @mandymholl 🔥 What an excellent question about Fountas & Pinnell! #AskFandP

My son didn't get the early effective intervention needed. I reinforced a balanced literacy approach at home with him...I have lots of mom and teacher guilt. This is why I am an advocate so others can start this journey on the right and effective path. #KnowBetterDoBetter

Train your administration and teachers first. They can’t even vote about appropriately aligned curriculum if they don’t understand the #scienceofreading
