Bulky pastas—like farfalle and fusilli—require more packaging than thinner varieties, making them trickier to transport and leading to more waste. 🍝 On #NationalPastaDay, learn more about a different twist on pasta dough that could help reshape food manufacturing, according to

Excited to share that we have moved to @DOM_UCLA! We study intestinal epithelial-immune cell interactions and how these interactions are influenced by changing microbiota 🦠. We look forward to recruiting students and postdocs soon. Watch this space for updates!

Side note for lovers of #GAPs, we tried to get GBS to translocate. It took both disruption of EGFR AND antibiotics before we could see GBS translocate from the intestine. The reduced ability of GBS to bind mucus may limit its ability to access GAPs in comparison to other microbes

In surviving pups, we found long term colonization of the intestine by GBS. Immunization of dams before infection increased GBS specific IgA, reduced EOS in pups, and reduced colonization of GBS in the intestine. Maternal IgA for the win!

To test if maternal IgA could protect against GBS colonization in vivo, we turned to a mouse model of vaginal colonization and transmission of GBS during birth. This results in early-onset like sepsis consistent with the lung as a route of infection in the pups.

We found GBS frequently in the intestinal microbiota of premature infants in the first few months following birth. Interestingly, we found the relative abundance of GBS negatively correlated with the concentration of IgA in paired milk samples.

Long term intestinal GBS colonization represents a threat of #sepsis to neonates and here we show how multiple modes of protection combine to restrict GBS in the intestines.
