I spent the last months speaking with 30+ contestants, producers, and judges from "America's Next Top Model," in light of backlash against "ANTM" and Tyra Banks.
Here is what I found:
Unsurprisingly, McDonald's Beyond Meat test doesn't mean a 100% "vegan" burger – the PLT will be grilled on the same grill as other meat-based products.
"If you were in his favor, work was joyful and fun," Christy Stratton, a writer for "The Amanda Show," said. "But if you upset him — even unintentionally — he would burn you to the ground."
Earlier this year, the head of the Chick-fil-A Foundation told me the company would consider donating to an LGBTQ group if if the partnership was 'authentic'.
While many of Schneider's leading actors were teenage girls, Schneider once "openly stated he didn't like having female writers in the writers room" and rarely hired them, a longtime Nickelodeon writer said.

@DaniellaMonet
told Insider some of the actors' outfits were "not age appropriate."
"I wouldn't even wear some of that today as an adult," Monet added.
Four writers and crew members said Schneider proposed scenes they felt were overly sexual for teenagers on a children's show, such as when the cast rubbed food on Victoria Justice's exposed midriff.
Two writers said Schneider was almost singularly responsible for online content in Victorious' early seasons, which they felt could sometimes be inappropriate
In a gender-discrimination and hostile-workplace claim made in 2000, a writer on "The Amanda Show" said Schneider had made her uncomfortable by persistently requesting massages, according to two people.
Days after Adam Rapoport wrote that "food is political," he once again refused to raise the salary of the magazine's only Black woman on staff — who he also expected to clean his golf clubs — from $35,300

I know some people wish this was not paywalled. But, dedicating months to report this out unfortunately requires $$! A trial subscription is just $1 and signals that you think topics like this are worth investigating.
1. National Sandwich Day is Nov. 3.
2. Chick-fil-A tried to do National Sandwich Day marketing.
3. Nov. 3 is a Sunday.
4. Popeyes is relaunching its sandwich on National Sandwich Day, Sunday, Nov. 3.
ANTM is famous/infamous for its makeover episodes. Numerous contestants dealt with issues like bleeding scalps and, in cycle 12's Aminat Ayinde's case, long-term damage.
For David McAtee to be shot and killed next to where he ran his BBQ stand – by officers sent to break up a crowd – says a lot about what businesses/restaurants are protected
BREAKING: 52 Black former McDonald's franchisees are suing the fast-food giant in a racial-discrimination case, claiming the company sent them on "financial suicide missions"
"ANTM" wrote the playbook for reality-TV competitions. But numerous contestants told me the show could cause real harm, and even some producers are now grappling with its impact.

and I spoke with Popeyes employees working 60-hour weeks during the chicken sandwich wars, facing down massive crowds and threats from hungry, angry customers
Schneider maintains good relationships with many former stars, including Ariana Grande, attending one of the pop star's concerts in 2019 at her invitation.
One of the first details about Brandy Melville that made me raise my eyebrows was that, every shift, every retail employee is required to send a full body photo of herself to execs. For years, this was sent via group text
Also, everyone yelling at me in my mentions — I am not a McDonald's franchisee. I am a reporter. I have written my thoughts on solutions in this article, with the headline: "There's a simple solution for companies struggling to hire: Pay workers more"
I spoke with 32 current and former Brandy Melville employees. All of them said that the company's hiring and firing practices were heavily influenced by appearance, with execs seeking young, thin, pretty, white teens
One year ago, Eleven Madison Park reopened without meat.
According to employees who worked at EMP over the last year, it has been, "to put it very simply, a shit show."

In a show where the underdog narrative reigned supreme, many contestants from underrepresented groups felt their sexual orientation, disabilities, and weight were mined for drama.
At Subway, things always come back to Fred DeLuca.
I spent the last few months speaking with people who knew the co-founder and trying to unpack his complex legacy. Here's what I found:
The first two episodes of
#QuietOnSet
are now streaming on Max! Working on this series has been an incredible and enlightening experience, and it means so much to be able to share it with the world.

@rrpre
has been working on this for weeks. So often people talk about cancel culture as if "one mistake" can ruin a white man's career. Reporting like this shows how often these "mistakes" are a pattern that severely impact the careers and lives of BIPOC
Thousands of Starbucks workers have signed a petition against understaffing in recent weeks, with multiple employees telling me their stores recently cut labor
I got my hands on 150 screenshots of a group chat of male Brandy Melville higher ups — including the CEO — which was full of racist and antisemitic jokes
A former Chick-fil-A VP who was at the company for 32 years liked a comment about "*ucking f***" always complaining. Unliked a few minutes later, so going to assume this was a mistake!

Many contestants I spoke with — including some who said the show impacted their mental health — wanted to avoid labeling ANTM or Tyra exclusively as good/bad/cancelled.
It took many people's bravery + willingness to speak with me to write this. If you're a Brandy Melville employee, I'd love to hear from you. (If you're hitting the paywall, DM me, we'll figure something out)
There were extensive photos of Hitler, memes about the Holocaust, and other material mocking Jewish people, some of which we determined was too graphic to publish
Today in McDonald's X Travis Scott news – the chain is running out of Quarter Pounder fresh beef, bacon, slivered onions, and shredded lettuce because the of the meal's popularity
NEW: A

survey finds that 44% of McDonald's workers say they have been verbally or physically assaulted after confronting customers who weren't wearing masks
Working at Brandy Melville could take a toll on employees' mental and physical health. Three told me they believed the job sparked or fueled eating disorders.
(This is pretty common for fast food chains teaming up with Beyond/Impossible, and rolling out new grills for a 28 location test would *actually* be impossible.)
