Out in Maidenhead today talking to residents about the PCC’s call for the public to confront shoplifters. As someone who’s worked in retail, I know that his calls puts people at risk. We need more neighbourhood policing, not putting the public in danger whilst they’re shopping.

This is just the latest chapter in a decade long story of the Conservatives endangering shop staff, customers and police with their disastrous cuts and blaise attitude towards crime.

Confronting shoplifters sounds simple - until the person has a knife. Or is aggressive. Or is under the influence. This advice puts lives at risk, and it’s frankly irresponsible.
