We argue for 3 changes needed for a more fair, transparent+efficient residency application :. 1⃣Reinstitute USMLE Step 1 exam scores in some form.2⃣Retain multiple categories for grading medical school academic performance.3⃣Limit # of research experiences that can be disclosed.

⚪️USMLE Step 1, most preclinical 📖+ clinical rotations=pass/fail.⚪️Many dean’s letters refrain from categorically ranking graduates.⚪️Residency programs now review ⏫ applications. The pendulum has swung too far away from objective metrics @JAMA_current .
