While on a diplomatic visit to Moscow Trump was dining with Putin at the Metropol Hotel restaurant. The waiter came to their table and asked Putin what he’d like for his main course. Putin said, “I’ll have the steak.” The waiter said, “Excellent choice, sir. And for your

This is important @DavidLammy the most senior Judge in England and Wales speaks to her concerns about your ill conceived jury trial curtailment plans. Don’t dismiss this intervention like you have continually dismissed the concerns of lawyers and MPs. We need you to listen hard.
“I see it not only as appropriate but my responsibility to make it as plain as I can that I have grave security concerns if there are going to be judge alone trials,’ the Lady Chief Justice said. ‘It's a very different environment to be working in”

David Lammy MP has been hammering home that his proposed jury restrictions are for victims of crime. Yesterday, over THIRTY organisations across the VAWG sector wrote David a letter. And it was clear: They do not support the restriction of jury trial. https://t.co/XrGXTGlP7x

Judges would be quite entitled to say “I didn’t sign up for this” and retire and take the pension. The government is throwing Judges to the wolves here and it is not right and it is not fair. A jury is a shield against a judge getting all the blame for unpopular verdicts.

Powerful moment in the Chamber just now as Charlotte Nichols waived her right to anonymity and said she was raped while an MP - and described her experiences of court process and backlog She says jury trials are not the changes victims needs
NEW: Labour MP Charlotte Nichols reveals she had PTSD ‘after being raped after attending an event’ ‘I waited 1,088 days to go to court’ She tells the Chamber in the courts debate: ‘Experiences like mine feel like they are being weaponised in this debate’

.@DavidLammy you weren’t in the chamber to hear this. You should have been. Listen to someone who is a victim of rape, telling you that your Bill will not help rape victims
🚨 WATCH: Labour MP Charlotte Nichols reveals she was raped as an MP as she opposes the jury trial reforms "I waited 1,088 days to go to court. We've been told [by the Government] that if we have concerns about this Bill, it's because we've not been raped"

Watch Karl’s speech and you will see why. He has made amazing progress 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@KarlTurnerMP Abstain? How is that helping? (I appreciate what you are doing generally - and sadly you seem to be having to fight it on your own.)

Trump started an illegal war. A Tomahawk cruise missile killed 110 children. It must have been the USA as they are the only force that possesses these weapons. Yet our right wing media have the nerve to criticise the government for not supporting him https://t.co/JWz22ou204

Joanna is politer than I am going to be. For the Justice Secretary - a former barrister - to suggest that being wrongly accused of a crime and imprisoned for three years is just like “scraping your knee”, should be a resignation matter. @DavidLammy owes the public an apology.
Your local friendly criminal barrister here! 👋 I need you to know that anything up to a three year prison sentence imposed without a jury trial is really not the same thing as scraping your knee without seeing a consultant.

.@DavidLammy why were Society Labour Lawyers told by Ministers that they cannot say publicly what they think of the jury curtailment plans? Why have they been told not to brief @UKLabour MPs on this stuff? Can @sarahsackman throw any light on this? @catkinson80? 🤷🏼♂️

Here’s another one. These reforms are designed to ensure fair and balanced treatment for complainants and accused alike. FALSE
David Lammy is doing a ‘true or false’ exercise with his court reforms. We can all play that game. Let’s start with this one: if you are falsely accused of sexual assault with a sentence threat of 18 months in prison, you will still have the safeguard of a jury? FALSE. 🪡 🧵

1/ Sarah is positioning her illiberal assault on the right to trial by jury as some sort of service to victims Defendants who are wrongly convicted are victims of a system in a rush. Genuine victims who see convictions quashed on appeal are victims twice over. This is pure spin.
Next week the Courts and Tribunals Bill will have its second reading. I look forward to engaging in debate on the future of our justice system. There will be the usual time for full parliamentary scrutiny. Throughout the debate I hope that everyone has, in their mind, victims

@sarahsackman But you haven’t debated this, you have simply gone ahead with it. Oh, and those of us who actually work in the CJS use the word victim cautiously.
