There is a big problem today where countries and large companies are investing in forests and soil carbon to offset their fossil CO2 emissions. This fundamentally does not work from a physical climate perspective, and threatens to undermine net-zero targets. A thread: 1/12

Body fat has 37 kJ of energy per gram. Converting to battery units, that’s 10,278 Wh/kg. The best lithium-ion battery packs on the mass market today are around 270 Wh/kg. So human biology is still 38x as good as lithium-ion batteries. A lot of room to get better.

"70% of the PJM electric generation that failed to perform during the December freeze were natural gas-fired power plants." ... "More than 90% of the forced outages came with no notice or less than one hour’s notice." Gas is unreliable. https://t.co/JIYCDcSwcP

Using the latest @EIAgov data, we observe that 2022 was the first year when capacity from wind, solar, and battery storage exceeded capacity from coal. Keep an eye out for more findings in Synapse’s upcoming Electricity Snapshot.

Tip for an exciting January: coincidentally read Asimov’s ‘the Martian way’ right before @TheBTI releases its Dialogue theme so when they do, you’re already PSYCHED about the capability of human tenacity to decouple society from perceived resource constraints
Geoengineering. Space colonization. Transhumanism. What do these extremist outcomes of the "Metabolic Rift" (c/o Marx) reveal about humanity's relationship with nature today? Save the date for this year's @TheBTI Dialogue, June 21-23 in California: https://t.co/agqQRWRXhJ

Laboratories of democracy sometimes produce…different results.
California bans the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035. Wyoming resolution calls for a phaseout of new electric vehicle sales by 2035. https://t.co/B4NBlhDDaa

1/3 Is solar geoengineering underway? My take is no. Symbolic actions can have big impacts, but theater does not equal reality. When I buy a ticket across the Atlantic, my decision puts more sulfur in the air than did the first "make sunsets" balloon. https://t.co/otE0tKRIkG

This graphic suggests that manufacturing one electric vehicle causes enormous diesel emissions from the earth mover alone. Is it true? Let's check the math:

100%. This is why I joined @SynapseEnergy—to join dedicated folks using math, models, and testimony to save money and accelerate benefits to real people through the energy transition. Important work!
With 0.75 $trillion/yr going to clean energy it makes sense to spend a bit more (how about 0.03%) on policy-relevant research that might teach us how to waste less of the big $$$. A set of young researchers make the case in @ScienceMagazine

Excited to announce a project we've been working on for a while: PERC launches an innovative compensation fund to help ranchers near Yellowstone address brucellosis, a disease that elk spread to cattle that can impose significant costs on ranchers. https://t.co/7Fewy6n3Fc

At a time of rapid regional growth and fragmentation as a result of development, supporting large, working cattle ranches by minimizing the impact of brucellosis is an urgent priority for habitat...

Lava from the ongoing eruption at Mauna Loa is flowing close to the observatory. It's likely that the road or power lines to the site will be impacted soon shutting down the instrument.

I have a new "big ideas" piece in the @guardian today arguing that we will need to reverse climate change, not just stop it. https://t.co/w8RgbeqV1b A thread: 1/14

With the world on course to exceed 1.5C warming, taking carbon out of the atmosphere, as well as lowering emissions, will become increasingly important

Whenever I talk about EVs, someone always asks "what about emissions from battery production & minerals?" Turns out: upstream emissions associated with producing gasoline for an ICE vehicle are larger than those 'embedded' in minerals and battery production for an EV. ⤵️

As the executive director of @TheBTI, @TedNordhaus has overseen or written essay after essay diagnosing the failures of the environmental movement and charting a more effective way forward that would harness the politics of the possible. #FuturePerfect50
