Overall, the identification of these metabolic phenotypes provides insight into the dysfunctional immune response in acutely ill COVID-19 patients and provides a means to predict and track disease severity and/or design metabolic therapeutic regimens. 5/5

Metabolic profiling also revealed MDSCs that expressed elevated CPT1a and VDAC1 in COVID19 and correlated with disease severity. scRNAseq provided clues to their possible function including release of alarmins (S100a8/9) and chemokines (CXCL2/3). 4/5

In particular, T cells displayed elevated expression of VDAC1 and showed signs of mitochondrial dysfunction by scRNAseq, confocal imagining and electron microscopy, leading to release of cytochrome c and T cell apoptosis, correlating with lymphopenia. 3/5

Using the @CytekBio Aurora to perform high dimensional flow cytometry, we evaluated metabolic programs on the single cell level to discovered multiple immune cell subsets unique to COVID-19 infection compared to other viral infections. 2/5

Stay tuned! We are excited to be participating in this wonderful seminar series!
@J_Powell_Lab is our next speaker at the Online Immunometabolism Seminars. Targeting Immunometabolism in Times of COVID-19. Or maybe as therapy for COVID-19? We are really looking forward to this one!

@FrontImmunol this builds on previous work from our lab in collaboration with @VCAlabHopkins in @CellReports in 2015, in which we demonstrated combo DON, 2DG, and metformin as metabolic inhibitor therapy was a powerful way to inhibit skin and heart transplant rejection https://t.co/Hcv8CTOImE
