Does anyone out there have a similar experience? Is this kind of stuff just common as you spend more time publishing papers, or was this an isolated experience? My gut feeling is on the former, but who knows? 8/8.

I read this ms, again and again, flabbergasted. I mean imitation is the highest form of flattery, sure, but I was beside myself. I spoke at length with the editor. They ended up rejecting it but in this era of publishing it will appear in some journal somewhere soon enough. 7/.

I don’t know how it made me feel, but worst case scenario (and as an EiC seeing plenty of this from paper mills), this was AI generated based on a prompt to reproduce our paper with another gene in the same family. 6/.

What’s more, the gene (Goi3 in the example above) is well known NOT to do the thing Goi2 does, but the ms repeated the metabolic work we did on Goi2 and showed differences. (Also Goi3 isn’t even expressed in T cells) 5/.

I shared it with some folks close to me to help me review, just to make sure I wasn’t crazy (i told the editor about this). The experimental setup, the readouts, even the cartoons all essentially lifted from a story my group had published some time ago. 4/.

Hand to god: this ms was largely, panel for panel, a copy of a paper I had published, but with the number of the gene of interest changed (as an example an entire story on gene of interest3 where our original paper was on Goi2). 3/.

Broadly speaking it was on metabolism of tumor infiltrating exhausted T cells. Makes sense I was invited. But as I started to read it, everything looked… familiar. 2/.

I want to share a harrowing scientific experience, without exposing too many details, to see if any of my Twitter science friends have seen the same. I was asked to review a ms from a low-mid impact journal. The title caught my eye, so I agreed, but was in for a surprise. 1/.

Mitochondrial challenges? Oh c'mon. Do you know hard it is to study mitochondria, even with biosensors, microscopy, genetic tricks? What an embarassment.

Amanda @theLundLab and Nik @Joshilabyale and I had this idea to put together a conference about the next wave of cancer immunology. We’re pretty excited about the topic, the speakers, and the venue! Come join us and let’s talk about what’s next for cancer immunology!.

So there was a dunk tank for philanthropic funding at @UPMCHillmanCC today - i told my crew if they could raise 100$ between them I’d get up there. I have a lot of athletes in the lab now so let’s just say I’m pretty damp. But we raised quite a bit!

I feel like this one quietly slipped in last week. Obviously it goes without saying that politicians should not be in control of science.
