Some of the low Pakistani + Bangladeshi enrolment due to lower employment rates (and more self-empl). But employees of these ethnicities also more likely to opt-out after automatic enrolment. See here for more (w @LaurenceOBrien_ @David_Sturrock) : .

What factors contribute to ethnic gaps in private pension participation rates, and how might these gaps impact future retirement incomes?

Instead, in our @TheIFS Pensions Review we suggested that employers be obliged to make at least a 3% pension contribution to almost all employees. Helping to address the fact that about 20% of private sector employees are not in a workplace pension scheme. (2/3).

Following our @TheIFS Pensions Review over the last 2 years, the government's announcement on their new Pensions Commission is most welcome. There's a lot to like about UK pension system, but issues and challenges that need work.

It is welcome that the new Pensions Commission will assess the adequacy of the retirement savings of today’s working-age generations.

Why is there speculation about moving doctors' remuneration away from pensions?. Well almost 1/4 of doctors in core training opt out of the NHS pension. Similar issues (to differing extents) exist in other parts of the public sector too, not just doctors!
There are reports that the government is considering changing student loans or pensions for resident doctors. We've written a new @TheIFS comment on the potential merits of such changes. Here's a summary:

This is very kind. Especially as I thought @PJTheEconomist was meant to be enjoying himself on holiday!.
Hugely well deserved. Jonathan has been a wonderful colleague and a great leader of our work on pensions and retirement as well as on inequality. The second person I appointed as a fresh new graduate who has risen to become a deputy director @TheIFS I couldn’t be happier.

I am delighted that starting today, I am Deputy Director at the @TheIFS, as @HelenMiller_IFS becomes Director. Looking forward to working even more with my fantastic colleagues to help IFS succeed and deliver rigorous and impactful research on key policy issues facing the UK.

As part of the @TheIFS Pensions Review, we drew on a huge amount of data. @ELSA_Study was a key source of data with 20+ years of information on older people's wealth, work and health in England. @Heidi_Karj and I have written about it here: .

BBC's coverage of the OBR report on fiscal risks includes this line about our @TheIFS work. Not quite how i'd put it. the point is that we can follow what Australia does - long run rise in line with earnings, while still protecting again inflation in every year.

More generally, it is great to see the OBR draw on a huge amount of IFS work undertaken on pensions adequacy as part of our Pensions Review

Big challenges for the public finances coming from state pensions: ageing population & triple locked state pension. A better system is possible: use the triple lock to reach a target for the state pension & long run growth in line with average earnings.
The triple lock has cost around 3x more than expected. In our central projection, the triple lock explains 1.6pts of the 2.7% of GDP rise in state pension spending. If recent volatility persists, it could add a further 1.5pts; a steadier path could reduce it by 1.3pts.
