In response to the A-level results, published on Tuesday, I discussed some of the reasons, and the impacts of these higher results. #alevels2021 #TeacherAssessedGrades #Universities.

However, this led to significant student complaints, with the NUS organising a boycott of the NSS. Ultimately, the plan to link fees to the TEF was removed, and fees have now sat at £9,250 for almost a decade.

The original idea was to use the Teaching Excellence Framework as a proxy for teaching quality, using measures of student satisfaction, and measures of students' progress and outcomes as measures of quality.

Of course, even in schools, where students are examined using nationally set assessments, teaching quality is notoriously hard to measure; in Universities, this is doubly difficult, given that Universities set the syllabi, set the exams, and mark the exams!.

In principle, linking fees to teaching quality is a desirable outcome, because it should align the incentives of Universities with the desires of students and governments - provide excellent educational opportunities for students.

The @BBCNews is reporting that an increase in Tuition fees is set to be announced by @bphillipsonMP today. When fees were lifted to £9,000, the intention had always been to link them to inflation, with plans to link fee uplifts to "Teaching quality".

Ministers say the amount students can borrow for living costs will also increase, and universities are warned to improve value for money.

When introducing theories of learning to new teachers, I sometimes find it useful to talk about the learning styles myth - in part because so many educators have grown up in a system where "learning styles" are the dominant paradigm.

However, there are still a number of (UK and international) institutions where even a short Google search shows quizzes still being promoted to students to "find their learning style".

A few years ago, I found a number of Russell Group Universities promoting learning style quizzes, particularly for their international students - thankfully, these now seem to have been retired.

This is really bad from the @TheEconomist and the @FT. Sadly some Universities are equally guilty of pushing the VARK "learning-style" myth - 🧵.

In 2013, I wrote a book about educational myths. I *didn't* include learning styles. Why? . Because even in 2013, so much research had already been published showing they were bunk. Didn't feel worth me going over it all again. It's now 2024. What's in @TheEconomist ?.

Fascinatingly, there’s another reason, which @qikipedia covered quite extensively. By setting a price of £5.99, very few customers tend to have exact change, so the seller needs to open the till - which will then record the sale!. This was a way of preventing theft!.

2. The Power of 9️⃣. Why $5.99 instead of $6? It's called "charm pricing.". Our brains see $5.99 as significantly cheaper. Most brands use this trick extensively. Next time you see $5.99, remember it’s more about psychology than pennies.

Great paper - I always struggle with papers that use rainfall as an instrument…. Either the rainfall variable is only weakly correlated, or when it’s strongly correlated, it’s linked to other determinants of the dependent variable!.
