I woke up with a small, specific sadness: I miss being on a trip with family or friends and waking up to the murmuring sound of other people, already awake, having a conversation in the kitchen in the morning.
I interviewed
@selenagomez
. She was very gracious and got real about what it was like for her to write a song about something very private and personal, despite living under constant public scrutiny. And now I feel very protective of her and this song!
I wished for something to distract myself from the anxiety of my Netflix show coming out at midnight tonight, and folks, I may have overshot it a little
Today’s the 53rd anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, the case that made interracial marriage legal everywhere in the US. Thanks to Richard & Mildred Loving for fighting for a right my wife and I get to take for granted most of the time.
A request to anyone who has enjoyed Song Exploder on Netflix: it would be especially great if you watched *all four* of the episodes. Not just because I think they're all interesting and worth watching, but also because it matters a lot in determining the fate of the show! 🙏🏾
Can we admit that “when they go low, we go high” is a failed motto? They go low — they lie, cheat, obstruct, stall, and backstab — and keep winning. I want politicians who aren’t bringing flowers to a gunfight. Get your damn hands dirty for the sake of American civil rights.
My mom‘s food is in the
@nytimes
. Incredible. She can’t make her mango pie herself anymore, so thank you to the lovely, wonderful
@CiaoSamin
for honoring her and her cooking this way. This is still the best dessert I’ve ever had in my life.
The best part of
@WestWingWeekly
was talking to Josh. Trying to find things to say that he'd find interesting or insightful or surprising was a great weekly challenge; he's not easily impressed. Mostly though, he would reduce me to laugh-tears, all the time. I'm gonna miss that.
I was thinking how it would be nice if I could automatically donate money every time I made any, and have it automatically dispersed to all kinds of causes that will help people and yes, folks, I just invented TAXES
Episode 2 of
@SongExploder
on Netflix is with
@Lin_Manuel
, breaking down "Wait for It" from Hamilton, along with Tommy Kail &
@LacketyLac
. Lin shares the voice memo he made in the first moments of writing, and then you get to see it evolve into the fully orchestrated masterpiece.
It's not the biggest moment in the
#TedLasso
finale, but I loved it when Roy says, "It hurt my feeling." Singular! He only has one! and now it's been hurt! So great.
We asked Aaron Sorkin to be our guest for a
@WestWingWeekly
taping in SF. We offered to fly him there, put him up, etc. He agreed to do the show, but insisted he cover his own costs. He told us to take the money we'd spend on him and donate it to
@Justice4Vets
instead. So we did.
I just checked with Lindsey to confirm that watching The West Wing reunion special is, in fact, more fun with me saying every line along with the actors.
If I'm ever really annoyed at something, there is no better person to call than
@JoshMalina
, who will 1) immediately take my side, and 2) get even more annoyed than I am, which makes me laugh and feel better. Unfortunately, he's left feeling worse. Sorry, Josh, and thank you.
Alex Trebek was a fixture in our house. My whole family would watch Jeopardy together every night. He was a model of quiet composure, intelligence, dignity, and gravitas. It was the greatest honor I could imagine to hear him say the words "Song Exploder." I will miss him so much.
Whenever an idea of mine gets ripped off by bigger outlets, people tell me that imitation is the highest form of flattery, but I would be happy with the second-highest form of flattery, money
I gave the NYT my take on why people rewatch the West Wing: that while other shows with a similar level of talent and prestige often involve murder/crime, TWW is mainly a gentle workplace family story—very well made, but easy to digest. They didn't use it.
I wish I had studied something in school that was relevant to my eventual career, but my college didn’t offer a major in Emailing People Incessantly in Hopes of Getting a Reply.
I had to rush to the airport so my hair is whatever and I thought, okay, no big deal, but it turns out Jonathan from Queer Eye is on the plane and now I regret EVERYTHING
As someone with two parents who survived smallpox in India, with the scars on their arms from the vaccination that kept them alive, let me just say: some of you white folks are CRAZY
It’s so wild to see that people are watching
@SongExploder
tonight. I can’t really express how happy it makes me to imagine being part of anyone’s Christmas. 🎄
Episode 3 of
@SongExploder
is with R.E.M., telling the story of how they made "Losing My Religion." It was an honor to get to talk to all four members of the band in this episode, and a thrill to see them delve into their memories of creating the song, thirty years ago.
Launched in March during the start of the
#COVID19
pandemic, Home Cooking is a podcast created by
@CiaoSamin
and
@HrishiHirway
dedicated to helping you plan delicious meals while stuck at home:
I've been thinking about how cumbersome it is to have various subscriptions to Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, etc, and I was imagining if I only had to pay *one bill* for access to all of those. Yes, fellow cord-cutters, I think I just invented cable.
If you want to listen to something heartwarming today, my first episode of Partners, Season 2, is with
@Lin_Manuel
Miranda & Thomas Kail telling the story of their 20-year relationship as composer & director.
Your Podcast Host Name is just your regular name but no matter what when you say it into a microphone it sounds super weird and unnatural to you so you can be really self-conscious every time you record. Mine is 'Hrishikesh Hirway.' ugh, hold on, let me do another take
I hope Dr Ford feels that despite the outcome, her decision to come forward and speak was the right one. Courage doesn't have to end in success to be powerful. I'm grateful to her.
Coming next month: Book Exploder! I teamed up with the brilliant
@susanorlean
to make a new podcast mini-series where authors break down their work. It’ll run on the
@SongExploder
feed, and it debuts August 3!
The pandemic has decided to extend its run, so
@CiaoSamin
and I are extending our Home Cooking podcast, too. We'll be back on July 8! In the meantime, send us a voice memo with your quarantine cooking questions: alittlehomecooking

If we truly care about lifting up every voice and fighting on behalf of the issues that keep Americans up at night, let’s start by making our conversations civil and productive.
#YouDontHaveToYell
Incredibly, today’s episode features
@johnlennon
breaking down how he made the song “God,” from his first solo album! His family gave me access to his raw recordings and archival interviews with him & his bandmates to tell this fascinating story.
