This is in instructive in how the narrative dominates journalists. Axios tried to do a hit piece but all they got were quotes praising Biden. So they framed the quotes as criticisms and wrote a deeply silly piece as a result.

@Convolutedname Problem is that Critical theory in the hands of someone less than a genius is indistinguishable from conspiracy theories.

Washington Post reporter calmly explains that *of course* the Washington Post will not cover the Secretary of Defense unless you fly Washington Post reporters around the world on Air Force One.

You could lock up everyone who says something like this for life and, while it would increase positive sum outcomes in society generally, it would not incarcerate a single actual shoplifter.

Shoplifting is both fun and always morally correct, and if you take issue with that I can immediately tell you're a wealthy business owner. Normal people don't make this their whole personality lmao. On a more serious note the victims are places like Walmart and Macy's rip bozo.

it's funny/sad/astonishing that we're in a situation where trump's multiple indictments were political advantageous to him, and biden's exoneration is politically terrible for him

It kinda blows my mind that we invented television, understood immediately how persuasive it was, and now, eighty years later, brilliant *experts* don't notice that their view of everything from the Bill of Rights to Twitter is very convenient for Viacom.

@ilpomodoro2 Absolutely. I think that’s a big part of it. Leftist identity exists within Western religious world views. Compare Ancient Greece where the background assumption is arbitrary gods.

@ok_post_guy There is an unlimited supply of quotes from local party leaders complaining about the national party or candidates at all times. When they are deployed tells you something about the journalist but nothing about politics.

One reflection on the discussion: it’s not that there’s no case for siding with Palestinians or criticizing US policy, it’s adopting the good vs evil frame with an American president as the avatar of evil (so evil Dayen feels no need to explain) that I think needs study.

We need to study this behavior. How *exactly* did Israel-Palestine become a sort of Manichean final boss fight for so many people?

Fascinating real history: Black students peacefully protesting Columbia U gentrifying Harlem. White students, meanwhile, had a borderline conspiracy theory about the University’s support of a defense think tank. Blacks couldn’t get whites to stay peaceful!

Everyone of these cities has a young tech savvy population that happily buys stolen Target merchandise online from eBay or Facebook. It’s not just the theft. It’s competing with online sales of stolen goods.

I’m going to say this was a good call. So here we are: there’s no general principle that says campus protests are good. It depends.

Little known fact: The largest number of federal troops called to end a protest occurred on a college campus. It was the University of Mississippi. In 1962 students and "external community members" (white supremacists organization members) were rioting to prevent integration.

Biden’s comms on this could have been significantly better throughput if he cared about the domestic politics enough to let it override the substance. And he’s the same dude who withdrew from Afghanistan, politics be damned. Cohen doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Biden is very clearly ratcheting down support for domestic political reasons. One can agree or disagree whether he’s right to do so but let’s not kid ourselves as to Biden’s motivation
