Hegseth's rules are designed to prevent the free press from doing its job, as it has done in that building for decades without reprisals from any previous SecDef or administration, through wars and peace. Job No. 1: holding every SecDef accountable to the public they serve.

Without doubt, the Trump administration's demands and threats to news outlets covering the Pentagon are unacceptable. I'll say it again: these policies would kill essential journalism inside the Pentagon. Reporters will find ways to cover DOD leaders, regardless.

My thanks to the reporters who privately flagged to me that there was more to the story yet to surface, as PPA negotiations to eliminate press access rules with Hegseth's team appeared unsuccessful.
