But instead they are asserting DOGE can do it in the shadows by presidential fiat. If this gambit succeeds - if Trump (or Elon) can just override Congressional statutes and funding mandates, and Congress acquiesces - it's a very dark sign...and it won't stop at USAID.

No one on the DOGE team has been Senate confirmed. Oversight procedures are unclear. Yet: “personnel wanted to gain access to security systems and personnel files. Two of those sources said also they wanted access to classified information.”

I am confident that Trump administration officials will conclude at the end of their review that the bulk of U.S. aid programs are effective. But, “because NGOs may not exist in 90 days, programs that need to be turned back on won’t be able to.”

So what can Democrats do to stop Elon Musk’s hostile takeover of the federal government?

If this operation is so legit, why can’t those involved get a proper security clearance? Offer transparency to the American people? This is a plutocratic coup. If you want the power, run for office and be chosen by the people. Short of that, this is an exercise in vigilantism.

Their vindictive way of trying to shut down USAID sends signals all over the world that we are a nation at war with itself. It tells authoritarian adversaries that America is distracted and divided. It tells other nations we don’t care about them as China and others try to woo
