I’m in Sharm for today’s talks at this moment of precarious hope for so many Israelis and Palestinians. Our humanitarian scale-up in Gaza is well underway – yesterday brought some real progress. 1/
A huge moment and a vital, complex task. Thank you to all humanitarian colleagues involved, and thoughts with everyone who has waited and worked so long for this.

Sudan’s horrific war, now well into its third year, has proven extraordinarily resistant to efforts at peacemaking. The question now is whether that could be about to change. @alanboswell on a breakthrough roadmap to peace in Sudan. https://t.co/OiTkRdt1PV

The UN Rohingya conference is important for maintaining momentum on the crisis, but unless it is followed up with more concrete action, it will be a missed opportunity.

We are also raising the focus on another dimension of the crisis: insecurity in the refugee camps in Bangladesh. This is caused partly by increasingly unified Rohingya armed groups, which are enlisting refugees into their ranks. More info 👇 https://t.co/I8usRKYahE

Armed groups in the Rohingya camps of southern Bangladesh have joined forces to battle the Arakan Army, the ethnic Rakhine group that has taken over much of the refugees’ home state in Myanmar. But...

The situation is dire in Cox’s Bazar (the world’s largest refugee camp) which hosts nearly one million Rohingya refugees. Aid cuts are worsening their lot; the UN estimates funding for food assistance to run out by December. https://t.co/5XEAj2iN4A
The Rohingya in the camps rely wholly on @WFP food assistance to survive. We have a state-of-the-art operation, with 82 cents on every $ going straight to the people we serve. But current funding only takes us to end November. More money is urgent to keep this lifeline going.

In reality, the one-day meeting in NY is primarily back-to-back speeches of member states and civil society. Its main outcome will be a chair's summary of the speeches — which is decidedly less action oriented than many would have hoped.

The special high-level conference was pushed by Bangladesh to mobilize political and financial support for the Rohingya crisis, and to discuss a plan for repatriation.
