If you want Rónán Mullen to lose his Seanad seat, the first step is to register to vote or tell your NUI graduate friends to register. A large scale voter registration campaign is needed. It’s a numbers game and right now there aren’t enough of us registered to unseat him.
Unfortunately today was not my day. We came so close again in 5th place! Proud of the positive, issues-based campaign we ran & my amazing team. 11.4% & a big increase in 1st prefs. I hope to be in politics one day & I'll never give up fighting. Beidh lá eile ag an bpaorach! 😊 x
Senator Rónán Mullen said: 'Mental health has no evidence base' on
#PKShow
. His comment flies in the face of evidence -in a country that has one of the highest suicide rates in Europe
#Together4Yes
How can Ireland be more inclusive & tackle racism? Few ideas:
*End direct provision
*Remove 27th Amendment
*More spending on Traveller accomm
*Resource education access
*Hate crime legislation
*Diversity in politics
*School curriculum reform
#BlackLivesMatter
#EndDirectProvision
Cork says no to the far right and everything they stand for. No to racism, no to transphobia, no to homophobia, no to sexism and no to intimidation of library workers!
The Irish language decline was also accelerated because of the famine. About 40% spoke Irish in early 1800s if I’m correct and only 24% in 1861. Many affected worst were in rural areas where Irish was spoken more widely. Huge impact on our culture.
#TheHunger
#Gaeilge
Increased attacks on LGBTQ people
Blockading libraries
Burning tents of immigrants
And tonight Dublin city is shut down
Far right thugs have been allowed to embolden themselves for too long. When they’re given an inch they take a mile and our democracy if they aren’t stopped
It’s so important that NUI graduates stand up against hate. I’ll be asking people to vote for me again in the next Seanad NUI elections as a candidate who will champion the rights of the marginalised. I’m looking forward to launching my campaign in the near future.
I’ll be voting for
@MichaelDHiggins
because he represents an inclusive Ireland- he voted against the 8th Amendment in 1983 and has always been a supporter of women’s and LGBT rights. He has vision, a brilliant track record and is a president for us all.

I found Winnie thanks to the help of two amazing neighbours (I just met) Ian & Niamh. She was petrified & crying under a car. There will be no Dreamies snacks spared in this house tonight! Thanks so much for all the shares & tips for finding her ❤️ the Stoneybatter community! X
Zoom meetings be like:
*Can everyone hear me?
* Is everyone here?
* I'm going to share my screen, can everybody see it?
* YOU'RE ON MUTE!
* Can everyone mute themselves
* I think X has left the meeting
* Can everyone see me?
* X has messaged to say she can't get in
Really excited to start a new job today as Executive Director of the Irish Council for International Students (
@ICOSirl
). Great to meet the fantastic team this morning!
Happy St Patrick's Day ☘
These are my 5 favourite Irish words:
1. Draíocht (magic)
2. Liúdramán (eejit, lazy person)
3. Dearglach (the red glow in the sky in evening)
4. Plámás (sweet talk, flattery)
5. Sceitimíní (excitement)
What are yours?

1) Gardaí failed to protect library workers & the public from intimidation today. A decision was made to allow this rally happen outside a public library (forcing the library to close) and a hateful banner to be hung on the building for 3 hours
If you want Rónán Mullen to lose his NUI Seanad seat in future, the most important thing you can do right now is to register to vote or tell your friends to register. A very large-scale voter registration campaign is the key here 👉

It’s ok to not feel ok during lockdown or anytime.
My own mental health has really suffered in this lockdown and I’ve heard many friends say the same.
And onus shouldn’t be all on a person to ‘reach out’ - there needs to be a serious Govt strategy to address mental health.
The protest obstructing the library in Cork should have been stopped by the Gardaí and that hateful banner taken down. We shouldn’t give an inch to the far right because we know how that goes
The City Library was forced to close today due to public safety concerns.
As part of a protest on Grand Parade a banner was mounted across the entrance without permission.

Outraged at the ‘not all men’ comments online today. We know it’s not all men - literally nobody is saying that. What we do know is that men are the predominant perpetrators of violence against women (and men) in Ireland - and globally. It’s just facts.
A public library shouldn’t have to close because of the far right. The Gardaí need to do more to protect the public and workers from far right intimidation
📣 Public Notice 📣
In light of planned demonstrations on Grand Parade, Cork City Library will close to the public at 12.30pm on Saturday 29th July. This decision is taken in the interests of the safety & well-being of the public and library staff.
Great to see
#reelingintheyears
mark marriage equality this evening. A fond memory here from the count in 2015 with my friend
@ivanabacik
who is running for TD in Dublin Bay South. A giant champion of equality, a fellow former SU activist and one of my biggest role models!
I believe the streets are mine as much as anyone else’s
I’ve been assaulted twice by men when walking: punched in face once and threatened with rape once. I know I’m not unique.
The brutal killing of Ashling Murphy needs to be a turning point in tackling violence against women
Maybe this is an unpopular opinion - but what are we doing to support teachers at this time? I get that it’s good for a kid’s development to be in school but we are putting thousands of teachers at risk and there doesn’t seem to be any adequate support for them
#Covid_19
As he said himself, Michael D. Higgins has been ‘turning up since 1969’ for the Irish people. Let’s make sure to turn up for him and the values he represents at polling stations next Friday, October 26th. Every vote matters.

Sunday reminder that it’s ok to not feel ok during lockdown (or any time).
My GP told me last week that patients in his clinic needing support for anxiety/depression has gone up by 1006% in the past year. A shocking figure but not surprising in these times
Mind yerselves 💕
Easy for politicians in Ireland to condemn Trump now but don’t forget many congratulated him on his election in 2016.
@AodhanORiordain
was the most outspoken on the fact Trump has the hallmarks of a fascist:
There needs to be targeted communications from
@HSELive
and Government for undocumented people living in Ireland to take up the vaccine. Many will be too afraid that they will be deported if asked for ID and PPSN. It’s in all our interests that everyone can access vaccines!
After 10 years in Dublin, I’m packing my things to move home to Cork this week (said no Cork person ever 😉).
I’ll still be commuting two days a week for work and may move back in future but a break from paying to live in Dublin is definitely welcome at the moment!
Enormous credit is due to
@TheUSI
for mobilising the student vote like we've never seen before and for decades of work by student leaders on this. Ireland is lucky to have such a strong student movement!

Solidarity with
@rodericogorman
who has had to endure a faceless smear campaign in recent days that is clearly homophobic in nature. So important that we all call this out and great to see people from across the political spectrum doing so.
Two months today since the ballot boxes revealed that Ireland had overwhelmingly voted yes to remove the Eighth Amendment, 3 years after we voted yes to marriage equality. Still so many societal inequalities to tackle but all change is possible.

I used to think I was more of an introvert than extrovert but
#lockdown
made me realise how wrong I was - I crave being in big groups of friends again and bumping into random acquaintances and having the total impromptu random chats. No scheduled Zoom call can replace it.

Brilliant that Michael D will be re-elected according to the
#exitpoll
& that a large majority voted for the values he represents. Those of us who share those values must never become complacent - we need to guard them, campaign for them and continue voting for them.

Pleased to be appointed (after applying through open competition via
@Publicjobsie
) to the Student Grant Appeals Board by Minister
@SimonHarrisTD
along with 6 others. Looking forward to getting stuck in.
Who at the BBC thought Ronan Mullen would be in any way objective about Citizens’ Assemblies? Of course he disagrees with CAs - they helped to pave the way for marriage equality & bodily autonomy in Ireland.

When will this stop? The amount of cases about men assaulting women these days is never ending. Also - ‘she died following assault’ = she was murdered.
We are saying goodbye to our Women in Leadership Coordinator Laura Harmon. Thank you for all your work for NWC and women in this country, Laura! We wish you all the very best in your new role 💜

Just delivering your Sunday reminder that lockdown life is not normal - and it’s very normal to feel lonely and down about life at the moment. We will get through this!

I'll be on Raidió na Gaeltachta
@Adhmhaidin
at 8.20am tomorrow discussing homophobia, transphobia, attacks on our LGBTQ+ community & what can be done
Beidh mé ag labhairt le RnaG ar maidin faoi homofóibe, trasfhóibe, ionsaithe ar ár bpobal LADTQ+ & cad is féidir a dhéanamh faoi.
Worth acknowledging this again.
@EamonGilmore
called for marriage equality in 1977 when he was
@TheUSI
president. Many decades before most and shows how student leaders led on this issue even when it was not acceptable or 'popular'
#MarRefMemories
There are no words. Disgusting policies based on hate. Also she says she is 'pro student' but she is against sex education and all of her policies are opposed to what students' unions stand for. 🤔

1) Small thread: There’s a serious issue in Dublin now in terms of street violence and increasing attacks on minorities. We should all be safe walking home but one issue that is concerning is the taxi problem. It’s very hard to get a taxi home at night in Dublin (after 10pm)
Thank you Dr. Peter Boylan, former Master of the National Maternity Hospital & Together For Yes campaigner for your endorsement, encouragement and supportive words about my campaign!

#SE2020

We must have serious conversations if Peter Casey got 21%. His comments targeting vulnerable communities were given a big platform. No country’s immune to that kind of sinister politics but what we can do is promote equality, critical thinking & participation in democracy
#Aras18
Fell in bathroom and cracked two ribs earlier.
Stay safe at home folks 😅
(Also what is the deal with the utter lack of late night pharmacies in Dublin..)
Wouldn't be one to begrudge pay rises in general but this is completely outrageous when many Oireachtas staff earn less than living wage. Starting salary for a Senator's PA is 23k I believe. What about pay increases for them?
The Dáil has passed laws to increase the remuneration of three 'super junior' ministers who will now be entitled to an allowance of €16,000 for sitting at Cabinet, on top of their €124,000 salary for serving as Minister of State
Please call 5 people you know now and ask them to vote Yes before 10pm. No room for complacency until polls close. We need a higher turn out.
#Together4Yes
60% of Seanad NUI envelopes are opened. First count will now be tomorrow morning! Thanks to all of the count staff and

My mom is getting her first vaccine tomorrow morning in the nursing home she works in! Good to see progress happening and a great relief to see this being rolled out in line with schedule. Feels like a glimmer of hope that the end is nigh in this

This is what happens when racism and far-right rhetoric are allowed to flourish and thrive in the open.
Local and national public reps need to all step up to the mark and stand up against this hatred.
