We study growth, regeneration and cancer biology using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster
Berkeley, CA
Joined November 2015
Today we completed 30 yrs as a lab - 12 at @MGHCancerCenter @harvardmed and 18 at @berkeleyMCB Thanks to all current and former lab members! Sixteen of them (17 soon) are running their own labs! I presented at lab meeting (outdoors) and lab peeps provided cupcakes and props.

After being with us for almost 13 years, Sunshine passed away yesterday. She was possibly the first dog to publish her research on Twitter - she was well ahead of @mbeisen in adopting the “publish and then review” model.
Sunshine publishes her first scientific paper (not peer reviewed). “Association of strong odors with trees in residential neighborhoods “

Issue 15 is complete! On the cover: When echinoid (ed) mutant clones (white) and wild-type twin clones (red) are generated in the developing Drosophila eye (right), the mutant tissue is eliminated. See Research Article by Spitzer et al. https://t.co/OpaODwK4Yf

A great thread by Vijay @kvijayraghavan on Dr. P. Babu that includes lots of lovely details on early studies of the wingless gene and cell fate determination in Drosophila imaginal discs.
Professor Padmanabhan Babu has—in his quiet and understated manner—had an important impact on developmental biology, only one aspect of which was the isolation of the lin-4 mutant allele (e912), highlighted below in the post by Richard Behringer @rrbehringer and the Society of

I’m sure Vijay @kvijayraghavan can add more on Dr. Babu’s contributions to Drosophila developmental biology eg wingless.
For many years there was only one lin-4 mutant allele (e912) #Celegans which enabled studies reported by Lee et al. 1993, describing 1st microRNA. e912 was isolated by P. Babu in Cambridge, UK. See The Backstory on Dr. Babu. https://t.co/0ACwOOmClf

While Gokul for all intents and purposes IS the ABC, I thought he deserves his own shout out, since none of this would have been possible without him:

Finally here! Our preprint on the MOSAIC, a multimodal adaptive optical microscope enabling non‑invasive in‑vivo imaging from molecules to organisms, is out. https://t.co/B2GHHP5b0K

Congratulations Varadha!
Excited to share our latest work in Molecular Biology of the Cell! We show how the M. tuberculosis lipid SL-1 activates the mechanosensitive channel TRPV4, setting off a signaling cascade that enhances lysosomal biogenesis and exocytosis in macrophages. 🧵 https://t.co/voM7YKyEIa

This is a truly amazing photo. Speaks for itself, much like “Earthrise” taken by Bill Anders from Apollo 8.
#BlueGhost got her first diamond ring! Captured at our landing site in the Moon’s Mare Crisium around 3:30 am CDT, the photo shows the sun about to emerge from totality behind Earth. Hope to have more shots to share soon! #BGM1

This alarm clock cannot be adjusted for the time change! Good thing is that when she tries to wake me up tomorrow it will already be 6.30 am and not 5.30 am.

This #AUSvsIND is becoming reminiscent of Aus vs WI of 75/76. WI won by an innings in Perth. Then it was all Australia. WI overly reliant on Roberts. Holding’s first series. Richards on the way to greatness. Australia did what Australia does - tough, relentless, played as a team
