Fiction fans: @Peter_Orner's new novel, "The Gossip Columnist's Daughter," is both chilling and a fun-as-hell read. Come for the Hollywood noir, stay for the talking cat. Out next week from @littlebrown. Here's my rave review for @BostonGlobe:

I'm reading Jill Lepore's forthcoming "We the People" and honestly this pathology is as old as the Constitution itself. Our republic has always been about money and the misery of others, from fortunes built on the bodies of slaves to the dispossession of Indigenous lands.
I think when historians look back on late imperial US “culture” they will be struck by the fact that everything was for sale, all speech was commercial speech, and so everybody lied all the time. Eventually nobody could tell what was true anymore, and so the whole place went mad.

I said it at the time: the protests of summer 2020 were a response to months of quarantine.
People also memory holed how absolutely insane summer 2020 was. We were going through an unprecedented societal & economic upheaval, seeing daily reports of thousands of deaths. Makes perfect sense that our reaction to things in that hyper intense moment would be worth revisiting.
