This episode is a personal favorite of mine; Talia and I (unbelievably) have never met in real life, but the compassion she displays in her book, and that's palpable in our conversation, really struck me. She treats the stories shared with her as sacred, which they are.
Last October I talked to @mobydickenergy about one of the best and most unique books on the Christian right, WILD FAITH, for @KnowYrEnemyPod subscribers. Given James Dobson’s death this week, whom we discuss, we’re making the conversation available to all. LINK to follow:.

Another key factor is that this was the first elections post-Jan 6, and Republicans were running insane election truthers all over the country, from county level positions through candidates for senate and governor (one reason the red wave didn’t happen).
There was way more shit going on in October 2022, we were seeing the fake Oz surge and the blue Oklahoma polls at the same time. Two years later all of the pollsters got their balls removed and said every state was an exact tie.

In the decade since Trump started running for president in 2015, the vast majority of what we’ve been told about Trump’s health has come from these two deranged freaks, one, well, see the photo on the left, the other a drunk and addict who turned the WH pharmacy into a pill mill
The “Trump is sick/dying” takes are so tempting because (1) Trump is extremely weird, including in his appearance and mannerisms and (2) in all seriousness, I don’t think we really have much (any?) reliable information about Trump’s health or physical condition.

My favorites of this genre:. 1. Doesn’t land the same now that he’s out of office, but Biden and John Major, last PM of the UK in 1997, are the same age . 2. When Dianne Feinstein was still a 90 yr old sitting senator, had Elvis been alive he’d have been younger than her.
all three presidents who were in office when I was a child are currently still younger today than the two presidents we’ve had since I turned 18.

Incredible stat, a perfect example of what Josh is getting at: Clinton at 62% approval in 1999, almost unimaginably popular by today’s standards, yet appetite for a third term under 30%.
At the risk of bringing up history when discussing Trump, I don't think the historical hostility voters have had towards the idea of a third term is understood enough. It's likely a big reason almost all VPs besides HW and Gore have lost. Here's what people said in 1999:

Rick is a national treasure, we need more pot smoking Lutheran libs in this country.
I love guerrilla TV production. I produce our shows on a tiny budget — smaller than a conventional commercial television producer could ever imagine — but even if I had unlimited money, it’s how I’d make TV: Just me, a two-person crew, and maybe a friend and fellow tour guide to

Haven’t listened yet, but on board w/ this framing. Younger and younger men dying from colon cancer, bodies full of plastics, rampant obesity, subsidizing high fructose corn syrup, chemicals banned elsewhere in what we eat—insulting to tell people this is fine and not to worry.
I talked to @ezraklein and @dwallacewells last week about COVID, MAHA, shifting dynamics in public health, and why everyone should read Richard Rhodes Making of the Atomic Bomb, stat. Link in the next ✨
