This makes sense... Dublin City Council is to trial the pedestrianisation of South William Street and Drury Street later this year, according to today’s
@thetimesIE
. Details to be announced “soon”.
“Sure, who’s going to sit outside in Dublin and eat or drink in the middle of December”.
@DubCityCouncil
’s path build out working an absolute treat on Drury Street. 🎄👌
How good would this be... an artist’s impression from the 2014 plan to revamp St Anne’s Street in Dublin versus what it looks like currently.
#BetterDublin
Seeing a lot of whinging about the look of the new public toilet at the top of Grafton Street. 1) Not sure what they were expecting given the urgency of the situation. 2) It looks a damn sight better than a portaloo. 3)Can we have some more? Good job, DCC. 🚽👍
This will please a lot of people... Dublin City Council to pedestrianise Merrion Row, Mary Street and part of Capel Street on a trial basis this summer.
Took a wander around the Fruit & Veg Market in Smithfield earlier. Hard not to get excited about the potential of the place. It’s a stunning building badly in need of some love.
Brown Thomas & Arnotts recently bragged all products they sell will soon be “sustainable”. At same time they’re threatening legal action to prevent the pedestrianisation of Sth William St - all to protect the flow of fume-mobiles to their car parks. 🤷♂️
You have to give it to the residents of Sandymount... this is the flimsiest argument I’ve seen yet against a new cycle lane. And that’s quite an achievement in Dublin.
Lengthy queues on a relatively quiet Easter Sunday show why more public toilets needed in Dublin city centre ahead of any lockdown measures being lifted. 🚽
Dublin’s Phoenix Park bursting at the seams this afternoon. Time for
@opwireland
to shut a few more gates and provide some much-needed additional space for people over the next few weeks.
Usually it’s straight home from Dalymount Park for a cup of tea. Tonight it’s back to work - and a very chilly airfield - to say a final farewell
@POTUS
@JoeBiden
and Air Force One…
It’d be funny if it wasn’t so ugly... In the area between the John Gray & William Smith O’Brien statues, there are an incredible 39 poles. All, seemingly, needed for different jobs. A little metal forest in the heart of Dublin.
99 seconds of pure goodness from the Terminal 2 Arrivals hall at Dublin Airport today as the heroic
@SOIreland
team (and their 75 medals) landed back to meet their very noisy and excited loved ones. 🥇
As great as it is to see Brown Thomas & Arnotts talking about decarbonising, worth noting that they remain 2 of the biggest opponents to pedestrianisation & reduced car use in Dublin. The two simply don’t square.
More pedestrianisation trials on the way in Dublin city centre. Anne St South, Duke St, South William St, Drury St & Dame Court to all be closed to vehicles for 4 weekends from 25th July (11am-7pm). Aim is to boost footfall in the area - which has been low since re-opening.
New DART plans announced today propose: 3 expanded lines; 3x capacity on the Maynooth line; electrification of 40km of track; a doubling of peak hour capacity to 52k. A hugely positive announcement for Dublin. Yet, RTE opts to lead with '6 pedestrian crossings to close'. Sigh!
Common sense finally prevails... Electric scooters to (finally!) be permitted in Ireland by Christmas. Scooters will be banned from footpaths ✅ Limited to 25kph under law ✅ No form of driving licence required ✅.
That's a wrap! After 7 great years, today is my last day working with
@DubCham
. It's been a great ride and I've been fortunate to share it with some fantastic people. Now for the next challenge...
Great to hear... Dublin City Council has agreed to repurpose parking spaces & loading bays around the city to allow more space for walking and cycling. Changes will include a 2-way cycle lane on Nassau Street.
#BetterDublin
Good news to wake up to... LinkedIn has agreed a deal to create a huge new campus in Dublin city centre. Will allow the firm to add a whopping 4,000 more staff in Dublin. LinkedIn already employs 1,400 here. Big vote of confidence in the city.
It often feels like there’s not much soul left in modern football. The achievements of Keith Long and
@bfcdublin
this season offer a little bit of hope. Phenomenal! Europa League here we come! 🔴⚫️⚽️
Good to see new parking protected cycle lane introduced on Westland Row. These are the norm in Copenhagen etc. It would be great to see them rolled out all across Dublin. Would make cycling much safer.
Nice early Christmas present for cyclists and pedestrians in Dublin... new segregated bridges opened today outside
@theccd
. Removes a real pinch point for those walking and on bikes.
#betterdublin
Finally! After 30-odd years of trying, my first ever hole-in-one arrived today. 8th hole
@RushGolfClub
. Wind off the right. Pitching wedge. Straight in. 💥⛳️☝️
More pedestrianisation on the way in Dublin. Following a review of the successful summer trials, Dublin City Council plans to permanently pedestrianise 4 of the 5 streets that were trialled (Sth Anne St, Sth William St, Drury St & Dame Ct). Duke St not being pedestrianised.
Looking at these before and after shots of a Dutch street, it’s hard not to think how well this would work on the likes of Capel St and Sth William St.
#BetterDublin
This looks cool... Dublin Port's plans to improve access to the port for cyclists and pedestrians. Includes a two-tier walkway/cycle track on the northern perimeter and a new elevated bridge near the main entrance for bikes and walkers.
This is kinda depressing... RTE news report from 1973 discussing the need for an underground in Dublin. And a rail link to
@DublinAirport
. 45 years later, we’re still talking.
#BetterDublin
This will upset a few people, no doubt. Proposals for a new 29-storey building next to Heuston Station were given the go-ahead today. A great location for a high density development like this.
@hazechu
We are indeed, Hazel. For the record, we weren’t asked to contribute our view here. Indeed, we haven’t been contacted for our view on the Liffey Cycle Route since stating we are in favour. I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions there.
32 years ago tonight I was out delivering Christmas cards with my Mum. There was a loud “whoosh” in the distance, the sky turned orange and then silence. Thinking of the 270 who died and all the folks back home this evening.

Looking at proposals for Dart South West. Can’t understand why no station in Cabra given high level of development there currently. Also, why not a station at Dublin Zoo? Call it “Zoo Station” and get U2 to pay for it 👍 🚇
Inspiration here for Dublin... Copenhagen are planning to turn a busy multi-lane city centre street into a tree-filled park. Question is, what Dublin street would you pick to transform?
Excellent news... 21 storeys on the way for the former Apollo House site on Tara Street. Planning permission approved today, following an unsuccessful appeal by An Taisce. A really good location for a bit of extra height.
This looks great... Plans lodged to replace the Park Shopping Centre in Stoneybatter with a new multi-use development of shops, student accommodation & apartments. Current site is an eyesore and a massive waste of space.
Another taller building on the way in Dublin city centre... Planning permission granted today for a 21 storey office/apartment block on site of the former Apollo House. Includes 54 apartments (45 1-beds & 9 2-beds). Building will be 79m high.
Fair play
@bfcdublin
... A strip launch by a League of Ireland club would normally barely make the local press. Today, Bohemian FC making headlines all over the world with their new Bob Marley away kit!
#GreatestLeagueInTheWorld
Ireland finally getting over it’s fear of heights? Dublin is to get a new tallest building... Johnny Ronan has finally been given permission to build a 22-storey building on Tara Street.

Dawson Street. One of Dublin’s premier spots for eating/drinking/shopping. Yet, just 2 bike stands on the entire street. 32 bikes parked on the street this lunchtime - 27 of them chained to signs/posts. Time for a re-think.
Dublin Chamber has called for
@DubCityCouncil
to trial the pedestrianisation of College Green. Let people and businesses experience what a plaza would really be like.
#BetterDublin
This video should be shown to the residents of Dublin’s Fitzwilliam Street. Puts their whinge that using bollards to create a protected cycle lane is “distasteful” firmly into perspective. 🚲
A noticeable drop in footfall in Dublin city centre since the pedestrianisation trials finished at the end of August. Both Henry St & Grafton St have seen a decline. A real pity these didn’t continue through September and weren’t expanded to other areas.
It’s 18 months since a planning application was submitted re a pedestrian plaza at College Green. As we await a decision, it seems a missed opportunity not to have trialed it - even for a day or a weekend.
#BetterDublin
Had a play around with a few well-known Dublin streets to see how they might look if we re-allocated the space that's available. Here's Dame Street & Capel Street. Thoughts?
#BetterDublin
A real shot in the arm for Dublin after the Google news this week... Microsoft has agreed to occupy three floors of the new No 3 Dublin Landings office block in the docklands, according to the Sunday Times. Enough room for 400 staff. Excellent news.
Escooter users in Ireland will be fined for not wearing a helmet. They’ll also be fined €1k if caught breaking the 25km/h speed limit. Second offence will lead to a €2.5k fine. For context, get caught speeding in a (2 tonne) car & the fine is €80!
Another ‘tall’ building on the way in Dublin city centre? Property group Marlet is planning a 21 storey block on the Apollo House site on Hawkins Street, according to the Sunday Times. 10 floors of offices & 11 floors of apartments. Makes sense.
#BetterDublin
I see 16 Clare St is back up for rent. Fascinating old building. It was a book shop (& library) for more than 150 years ‘til the early 2000s. Then became the Henry Jermyn clothes shop. Has spent the last couple of years as an ‘Irish gifts’ store. What next?
Lots of positive feedback on the closure of streets around Grafton Street at the weekend. Seems to have been good for businesses and people (in good numbers) enjoyed it too. The even better news... it happens all over again this coming weekend!
#BetterDublin
Just the 53 discarded ticket receipts at Marlborough
@Luas
stop earlier. Let’s introduce a ‘would you like a receipt?’ option and cut out the waste (and the mess!).
#BetterDublin
Disappointing (but not surprising) to read that a handful of retailers/car park operators in Dublin are planning legal action to stop the trial of the Liffey Cycle route. The Liffey Cycle Route is a great idea & could be transformative for Dublin.
Work underway this week on what will be Dublin’s newest railway station: Pelletstown (on Maynooth line). Trees and bushes being cleared. Station due to open later this year.
This sounds pretty cool... Trinity College looking to turn the grass lawns outside its main door on College Green into a “wildflower meadow”. Public being asked to vote on the idea, starting from today. You can vote here:
The four remaining phone boxes on Henry Street are nothing but an eyesore at this stage. None of them are in working order. 2 of them don’t even have handsets. Time to go, surely. 📞
1) Previous costing of Dart expansion was an initial estimate. 2) Dublin’s commuter services are bursting at the seams. 3) The longer we wait, the more it will cost. 4) Let’s get on with it.
So good to see southern side of Pearse Street coming alive. Numbers 183-186 (which will soon be 200 years old) have been revamped and now home to
@tcddublin
’s new ‘The Forum’ restaurant. These pics show the transformation.

"Building the Fitzwilliam Street Cycle Route would send a message that Dublin is serious about becoming a safe cycling city".
@DubCham
has today thrown its weight behind the proposal in submission to
@DubCityCouncil
.
#BetterDublin
Really disappointing to read that the Liffey Cycle Route is being delayed even further. Now won’t be finished until 2024 - 12 years after the idea was first mooted. A real setback in the pursuit of having a safe cycling network in Dublin.
A late night and some very cold hands for the daa Communications team tonight to help facilitate the arrival of Chinese Premier Li Qiang - and the largest aircraft to ever land at
@DublinAirport
. I can confirm, it’s pretty big! ✈️
This almost looks so good… Can’t imagine it’s too relaxing sitting here while streams of noisy cars, vans & busses whizz past a few feet behind. Come on
@DubCityCouncil
, just re-route all traffic & pedestrianise the whole of Merrion Row 👍
The redevelopment of the Carlton cinema site and Moore Street is so important for the future of O’Connell Street and Dublin’s north side. Great to hear architects being appointed for the scheme. One step closer.
