One in three Australian students are failing to reach proficiency in maths, and according to a new report, many teachers lack the confidence to teach it.

Thank you @yatesavenuePS for welcoming me into your school this morning. It was fantastic to observe a maths lesson taught using explicit teaching strategies. Well done @dmacsporran & team for embracing an explicit teaching approach for all students with great results.

A great piece by @buckingham_j. Thanks for sharing @MmeLockhartLDSB. On this debate, I find solace in the old Chinese proverb - “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now." From 2025, we’re mandating 25 minutes daily explicit phonics teaching.
“Early reading success is implicated in every other educational issue. If children can’t read, education is elusive.” One of my favourite articles by @buckingham_j , citing the work of @PamelaSnow2, @KevinWheldall, @RWheldall and others on the mission to improve student reading

With an emphasis in NSW on Explicit Instruction it is important to have a clear understanding of exactly what it is. The Australian Education Research Organisation or AERO, has very clear explainers on the what & how of explicit instruction @EdResearchAU

Explicit instruction breaks down what students need to learn into smaller learning outcomes and models each step. It allows students to process new information more effectively.

Edgeworth PS preschoolers have participated in their first Book Week! Students paraded around the school grounds bringing their favourite book characters to life. A great way to foster a love of books & reading in our littlest learners from an early age.
