Learners show stronger evidence-based, argumentative writing simultaneously with exploratory, imaginative writing, when both stem from the latter: explorative and imaginative learning opportunities.

Teachers’ evidence-based, argumentative prompts did not link to learners’ exploratory, imaginative writing (it only linked to students’ evidence-based, argumentative writing). We found the reverse, however, for exploratory, imaginative prompts: predicting both forms of learning.

Half the schools were 'treatment' sites for teacher development of deeper learning. Teachers in these treatment schools provided significantly more exploratory, imaginative learning opportunities *simultaneously with* evidence-based, argumentative learning opportunities.
