No thanks, Mr Musk.
Taiwan is a full-fledged democracy and a sovereign state, not an admin zone. Also, the world must understand that China won't accept any proposal that Taiwan is not part if it. China even cannot hold promises to HK. Making deal w/ China is always an illusion.
Fact check: this is the world's very first offical warning for Covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan, issued by Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare in Dec 31, 2019. Taiwan is indeed the first one to report to WHO (and messages ignored by authority).
China's Defense Minister: "We will use force if anyone dares severing Taiwan from China."
Well, Taiwan has NEVER been part of China (PRC). Also, Taiwan has become a full-fledged democracy.
There is no "re"unification of Taiwan. It is actually China's ambition of annexation.
Xi Jinping:"Compatriots on both sides of the TW Strait are linked by blood and are a family / TW issue should be resolved by the whole Chinese."
Fact 1: The Taiwanese see themselves as Taiwanese, not as Chinese.
Fact 2: Taiwan is already a democracy making decisions for its own
On Taiwan's local election:
1/ It has very little to do with the China policy. Local election is always about local issues. Any analyst saying TW is going to be pro-China is simply not true.
However, China's leader may have illusion that they can still buy supports from TW.
Does Pelosi trip bring tension/risk for Taiwan? This is wrong Q.
For TW, China's military threats are always there. Even though Pelosi not coming, CN still always punish/coerce Taiwan for any reason.
US should not be coerced by China, and should do more to engage with allies.
Pro-China intellectuals & political elites in Taiwan are trying to convince the public: bolstering self-defense is recklessly provocative. We argue that this rhetoric is misleading and it deepens China's ambition of invasion.

Suggested title for Pelosi's trip: "US House Speaker Pelosi visits Taiwan in support of democratic allies."
Wrong title that should definitely avoid: "Pelosi visits Taiwan amid tension with China."
All tensions are from China, not US, Taiwan, nor Pelosi.
I don't understand why so many ppl keep asking Taiwan's DPP to revise the party charter. The problem is always on China, CCP's charter.
Please stop describe Taiwan independence as a main threat to peace. For China, any plan that is not unification equals Taiwan independence.
A new journal, published by China's official academy, is
absolutely a propaganda machine and it should be renamed as "China's Taiwan Studies." The articles are not really "academic" at all, and we should note a basic fact: Taiwan is not part of China.
Extremely important point: It is China that fears Taiwan.
"Each of TW’s 23 million people is a living, breathing rebuttal of the Communist Party’s insistence that its repressive, authoritarian model is superior to democracy and the only mode of gov suitable for Chinese society."
I’m Taiwanese and I Want to Thank Nancy Pelosi.
As I argue in the essay, Taiwan’s agency is often overlooked in big powers games or in mainstream media. I appreciate

In Taiwan, DPP's win of presidency is NOT a defeat of China's interference. On contrary, CCP evolved into a hidden way, with more sophisticated approaches on informational warfare. They've successfully utilize people's fatigue of the issue and turn into hatred against DPP.
@AmbQinGang
1. Historically, China's "peaceful" means tons of bloods and millions of lives.
2. Taiwan has never been ruled by PRC, so there is no "re" unification.
3. The world should come up with methods to stop China's attempts to annex Taiwan by any means.
"It is vital that the whole world stands with Taiwan.
Just like every nation, be it Ukraine, Hong Kong, Palestine, or even our own Philippines, it deserves to choose its own future. "

Basic Fact 1/ China is pushing everyone to accept One China Principle, stressing that (1) there is only one China, (2) governed by PRC, and (3) Taiwan belongs to CN. Most Taiwanese agree that there is only one China (PRC), while Taiwan is already an independent sovereign state.
On Ma Ying-jeou's trip to China. Basically it is a pawn of China's united front.
For the globe, we must understand that it is impossible to make a deal with CCP, while it makes very clear about its ambition.

The problem is always on China, CCP's charter, NOT DPP's charter. For China, any plan that is not unification equals Taiwan independence. They won't be "assured" anyway.
Please stop describe Taiwan independence as a main threat to peace.
Great read for Taiwan's most salient issue: the China factor. It is not the unification v. independence debate. It is always about how to resist China's ambition of annexation.
Taiwan’s KMT deputy head of communication attends China’s CCTV, arguing that US treats TW as a servant w/o considering interests of TW and China. TW independent proponents and US “stimulates” relationship with China, threaten regional peace.
Its a pity KMT stands firmly with CCP
@jojjeols
True. Ms Lung's writing style is always like this. She often imagines nonexistent people and scenarios, then accuse Taiwan of wrongdoing.
On the war issue, she is "anti-war" but never say this to the dictators who use force.

My thoughts about Pelosi's trip to Taiwan.
(1/6)
Background: The trip was originally scheduled in April after Ukraine War breakout. Pelosi wants to show commitments to US allies, especially democratic partners. She tested positive for Covid-19 and the trip was rescheduled.
6/ In sum, the election outcome is a result of some internal issues of DPP, not on the China issue. The world media may overemphasize that there will be big change on the cross-strait relations. No, there will be very little impact.
“Ma Ying-jeou and Tsai Ing-wen’s trips show the world two strategic choices. It’s the democratic versus autocratic blocs. These two people just selected totally different directions.” My quotes on LA Times.

2/ Ruling DPP's landslide defeat can be attribute to (1) midterm election is often in favor of the opposition. Sometimes it is people's desire to gain more checks and balance to the ruling party.
4/ Actually, the opposition KMT does not gain too much vote compared with previous elections.
A notable trend: TPP becomes a viable third option and absorb many votes from both sides. It shows that people desire new options from traditional parties.
3/ (2)people's fatigue on the long term Covid-19 restricting policies and all of complaints go to the ruling party; (3) lack of new issues related to younger generations; and (4) negative campaign is the major theme of the elections so that the voter turnout becomes lower.
Recommend watching the interview with TSMC Chairman.
"Taiwan is Taiwan."
BTW, plz stop fear-mongering about any high level visits from the US and stop being fooled by China's propaganda.
5/ I view the rise of TPP as part of global trend on the rising populist parties, trying to meet people's demand on some quick alternatives on the traditional politicians. Other small parties specializing in social/progressive issues, on the other hand, still have difficulties.
Basic Fact 4/ Taiwan is now a full-fledged democracy, according to every well-est. indices. The vibrant democracy in Taiwan is a living rebuttal of dictator's insistence that authoritarian model is superior to democracy, esp for Chinese society. That's why China fears Taiwan.
@fravel
No matter what TW and US do, it is China that escalating the tension. Some ppl just underestimate China's ambition to become world leader.
In the Pelosi case, fear-mongering is what China wants. Plz do not assume that China is willing to compete with US under the US framework.
It's a pity that many still hold old views that Taiwanese cannot claim themselves as an independent nation or else China will attack TW. In fact, 1) more than 80% TW public agree with that statement, and 2) China cannot tolerate any option of no unification.
1. Historically, China's "peaceful" always mean millions of lives.
2. Taiwan has never been ruled by PRC, so there is no "re" unification. Rather, what China is doing is annexation.
3. The world should unite to stop China's ambition. Stop thinking any possibility of cooperation
We are ready to realize peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and efforts. “Taiwan independence” separatist forces are the biggest obstacle to China’s reunification. If they are allowed to go down the dangerous path, risks for tension will be heightened.

(6/6) Sum: CN overreacts to the trip because of heating nationalism and political struggle inside small circle. Media should avoid fear-mongering about CN's hollow words.
The trip is essential as it shows to entire world the importance of democratic values.
China's wolf warrior diplomacy continues.
In fact, Taiwan is already an independent country. And Taiwan is a full-fledged democracy, which is the main reason that China thinks TW is a threat to its legitimacy.

Meanwhile, the US gov seems to keep it low key when it comes to the visit. I just don't know why we should care about China. They will be angry whatever TW does.
News: China says its 'priority' is to stop Taiwan VP visiting US next month
(2/6)
The leader of the liberal world, US, should not be menaced by dictators. If China's threat succeeds, it leads to very severe damage to the U.S. leadership all over the world.
Without doubt, China is the main supporter of Russian leader Putin, backing up the brutal invasion of Ukraine,
As Secretary Blinken said, PRC is "the most serious long-term challenge to the international order."
Basic Fact 5/ Taiwan has never been ruled by PRC (est. 1949). Even in ancient times, the rulers of TW (Qing, Ming, the Dutch, the Spanish) only ruled for a small part of the island. 「台灣自古屬於中國」is simply false.
Any attempt of so-called unification is in fact annexation.
(3/6) Many ppl ask what kind of risk would Pelosi's trip to Taiwan pose?
Very little. China has been posing varieties of risks to Taiwan for a long time. They rise the level of threatening anytime.
For TW, China's military threats are always there, even though she not coming.
(5/6) How could this visit influence US-China relations?
No change because the US-China great power competition has already begun. Also, stop asking how the trip "provokes" the relationship.
It is China that challenges the US hegemon and provokes the US-China relationship .
Sen. Duckworth is visiting Taiwan currently. This is how the TW opposition KMT responds.
KMT chair Eric Chu is about to visit US, saying that they are pro-US. However, their legislators always doubt that the US coerces TW to do many things that are useless or just for US' profit.
71 PLA aircraft and 7 PLAN vessels around Taiwan were detected in our surrounding region by 6 a.m.(UTC+8) today. R.O.C. Armed Forces have monitored the situation and tasked CAP aircraft, Navy vessels, and land-based missile systems to respond these activities.
Our piece on "1992 Consensus" is (finally) out. In Taiwan, there is no consensus for sure, while China insists that 1992 consensus means pushing hard for unification.
@KweiBo
@kuomintang
But KMT has been cooperating with CCP since 2005. Although insisting ROC, KMT is not anti-CCP anymore. Also, all dimensions of the KMT major policies include cooperating with China, e.g. 發大財.
Sorry Professor, it is a fact that KMT is pro-China.
This slide shows current mainstream KMT thought that Taiwan independence threatens more than PRC. They just cannot tell who are the enemy and always want to cooperate with PRC.
This is a crisis not only for KMT, but also for Taiwan.
I just found out the person killed in the Laguna Woods shooting yesterday was my primary care physician, Dr. John Cheng. Absolute hero. He attacked the gunman and helped save so many in that church. I just wanted his name to be known. He will be missed.
Fact: Both One China Policy and the 2758 Resolution in 1971 DO NOT deal with the legal status of Taiwan.
Why not just answer that "oh we exclude Taiwan because China wants to"?
KMT's Hou says his 1992 consensus is to oppose both one-country-two-systems and Taiwan independence. Main problem is that China explicitly defines 92 consensus as OCTS and ALL other options are Taiwan independence. Question: does KMT really want to resist China's pressure?
Main problem is that KMT is highly US-skeptical for the domestic audiences in Taiwan, e.g., anti-US arms sales because it will "provoke China", and highly pro-China, but totally different rhetorics for the int'l audiences.
Hou Yu-iH, the Kuomintang's (KMT) presidential candidate for the 2024 election, has shared his perspective on foreign policy (Finally!), particularly concerning China and the United States. Here are some key takeaways:
Quoted by FT. "The US needs to issue more public information about its engagement with Taiwan."
A great discussion with
@KathrinHille
about Pelosi's trip to Taiwan.
BTW, I think it's a big loss for China in terms of US public opinion.
Basic Fact 3/ China coerced many companies to label Taiwan as part of CN. Acc. to studies, CN ask "every" situations (including schools, companies, any intl events) to label One China Principle, stressing TW is part of CN. It is simply false. Taiwan has never been ruled by PRC.
WHO just revised the timeline, which indicates that China did NOT report the outbreak of the pneumonia.
That is, WHO seemed to help China cover up its misconducts in the past few months.
@kuomintang
Do you mean "Ambassador" Shen is not professional?
And do you mean "Taiwan" is a partisan word? Please be frank. BTW, KMT administration also called Ambassador Kim, Ambassador Yuan on the official website. Do you mean they are not professional?
"Taiwan is already an independent country, under the name Republic of China," the committee report says. "TW possesses all qualifications for statehood, including a permanent population, a defined territory, government, and capacity to enter into relations with other states"
The British parliament has for the first time referred to Taiwan as an "independent country" in an official document.
The move breaks a political taboo as Foreign Secretary James Cleverly visits China this week.
Basic Fact 2/ Many countries (esp major powers) have One China Policy (not principle) that accepts 1 and 2 (only one China as PRC), but only acknowledges 3 (just take note China's position on Taiwan), not recognizing it. Under OCP, many maintain "unofficial" relationship with TW
A thread that includes my comments about Taiwan's former president Ma Ying-jeou's trip to China, in comparison with President Tsai Ing-wen's trip to US and Central America.
Polls have long shown that people in Taiwan increasingly identify as Taiwanese, not Chinese. But what does that shift look like on the ground? What does it mean to say you’re Taiwanese? We go deep with one family to find out. w/

China's "war and peace" propaganda often misplaces invader and defender. For defenders, it is not "encouraging war" but to strengthen self-defense capability. And the only possible cause of a cross-strait conflict is China's use of force.

Taiwanese Presidents Will Not and Can Not Unilaterally Change Taiwan’s Status

President Tsai: "We don't have a need to declare ourselves an independent state, we are an independent country already and we call ourselves the Republic of China, Taiwan."
An interesting comparison is former President Ma's interview in 2015.

Taiwan is a democracy and sovereign country, which is not ruled by China(People’s Republic of China). However, the historical issues after WWII have given Taiwan the official name of " Republic of China" has always lead misunderstanding of the relationship between TW and China.
