Lots of politics, plenty of travel, public transport geek & delving into the Eurovision Song Contest. My views are my own. Retweets not always endorsements.

It’s hard to overstate just how high the political temperature is running in Minneapolis. Militarisation of the police. A quasi-militarisation of residents in response, a network of people “on patrol”, standing on street corners, waiting to observe and deter ICE.
“As an immigrant, I would willingly sacrifice my life for any of the people here and this cause.” “It’s Nazi s**t”, protesters tell @lewis_goodall as they demonstrate against ICE outside its HQ in Minneapolis.

Agree with @gideonrachman excellent column. European appeasement hasn't worked. It's time to try a different approach.

Watching GB News or reading the Telegraph you realise there is a slice of right-wing opinion that would happily betray this country.
'These tariffs are a massive slap down for the globalists from President Trump.' Ben Leo reacts to Trump’s new 10% tariff on goods from the UK and several European countries. 'President Trump is trying to save the West from itself.'

Blimey Denmark’s oldest newspaper reporting Danish concerns about unofficial attempts by aid to bypass usual channels in gaining information about Greenlands military protection….
Dansk nervøsitet på højt niveau: USA søgte pludselig viden om »havne« og »landingspladser« i Grønland. https://t.co/ppSofRcGfY

The other obvious problem with Trump's unilateral tariff threat (once again unsanctioned by Congress) is that it proves that there is no earthly point making a deal with him. Whatever you think you've agreed he will almost certainly rip up whenever the news cycle seems to require

Not sure how real any of this is really… A European voice just suggested a European boycott of Donald Trump’s World Cup, is the only language or gesture that would actually get through to him. Astonishing yes perhaps not as astonishing as annexation of Greenland. Blimey.

The “people’s channel” praising a foreign president as strong as he tries to extort Britain. Truly patriotism at its best.
‘The international consequences of this move by Donald Trump cannot be underestimated!’ @AlexArmstrong says Trump’s Greenland tariffs show his strength on the world stage, while Keir Starmer's confused response reveals how weak Britain’s leadership has become.

Is it time for European national football teams to consider withdrawing from any of their games played at US venues - during the 2026 World Cup?

This is where NPR gets interesting… how does a line arriving into Piccadilly from the south but pointing westwards link into the trans-Pennine route from the east?
If Andy Burnham is successful in campaigning for an underground Manchester Piccadilly station (which is right) There has to be an NPR "Phase 2b" to connect the Liverpool/Warrington/Mcr Airport section to trans-pennine routes. So far absolutely nothing has been said about this.

Kemi Badenoch's ambush of Robert Jenrick was carefully planned and deliberately timed for Nigel Farage's press conference Rebecca Harris, the chief whip, called Jenrick to tell him he had been sacked while Farage was holding his press conference At 11.06, moments after Jenrick

Let's remind ourselves of what was promised in 2018 for £70bn of new east-west high speed lines across the north, thanks to far superior reporting to what we're seeing today: https://t.co/ynlDfjAPM3

Suspect this is going to be the first big Reform defection that backfires. It's not just that it fits the "dumping ground for old Tories" narrative. It starts to build the idea Reform aren't actually that different after all.
Nigel Farage on Nadhim Zahawi in July 2022: "I thought Zahawi had principles. Tonight we learn, he's just about climbing that greasy pole."

Let’s return to £100 minimum to fly, 60p to park…
Stansted Airport (1980). Michael Rodd (remember him?) extols the virtues of London’s 3rd airport (then 4th in traffic, behind Luton). Back then it cost well over £100 to fly but only 60p to park. Today you can fly for as little as 99p (minus taxes) but pay over £100 to park.
