If I argue with you, it's for two simultaneous reasons: 1) I want to change your mind (or someone else reading) if I'm more right than you are. 2) I want you to change mine if you're more right than I am. These are GOALS. No guarantees. I'm as human as anyone, maybe moreso.

Like, I realize that I won’t get my preferred ideology, but I don’t think we can survive (long-term; I’m no alarmist) without at least one healthy major party.

I bet there’s enough money and interested parties out there to start a party that is explicitly “what the GOP should be” or “what the Democratic Party should be”, without the big structural problems like closed primaries (or primaries at all).

I made a Chrome Extension that automatically shows when a news article or paper cites retracted research. With one click, it even pre-drafts an email to the editorial team or corresponding author! https://t.co/FnlKHTDXJn

A primer on the 2001 AUMF: It doesn’t apply to terrorists generally and notably doesn’t even name al-Qaeda. It certainly doesn’t apply to alleged “narco-terrorists” in the Caribbean or Venezuela. It applies to the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks and those who harbored them.

Tests exclude me from a lot of pursuits they F’ing well should. Tests are not to serve justice, they are to serve the people that the person taking them would like to take responsibility for.
Again, if you have a condition like ADHD, anxiety, or depression, and it makes it harder for you to complete tests on time, that is something the test should *measure*, not something it should avoid measuring.

Really important and timely TAITC on Smith’s feelings on protectionism and trade, beautifully laid out by @mungowitz. Link to follow to avoid deboosting.

Without any numbers or research I would imagine a lot of this is the fact that you can’t upgrade on machines without TPM 2.0. Windows users aren’t into buying totally new hardware all the time.
Adoption of Windows 11 is slower than Windows 10, as Microsoft bets big on AI. Dell says, "We have not completed the Windows 11 transition...." "In fact, if you were to look at it relative to the previous OS end-of-service, we are 10 to 12 points behind at that point with

helpful thread about why europe has to have infinity migrants forever, and they do, theyve enslaved themselves, they cant revise or abandon the echr any more any more than we can the civil rights acts huis clos
I decided to do a deep dive to figure out what it would take for European voters to change the law to allow them to deport migrants. For instance, say the voters of Italy wanted to deport Syrian terrorists to Syria. What would they need to do, legally to get that outcome? 🧵

Pete Hegseth should resign or be impeached and removed. Even if it were politically motivated, it would not be unlawful to make such a video. His effort to mislead millions of Americans about the Constitution, the freedom of speech, and the basic operation of law is abhorrent.
The despicable video urging @DeptofWar troops to “refuse illegal orders” may seem harmless to civilians — but it carries a different weight inside the military. This was a politically-motivated influence operation: ☑️ It never named a specific “illegal order.” ☑️ It created

It is rare that I agree with someone as hard as I agree with @asymmetricinfo in the latest Central Air from 16:00-18:00. Not necessarily about the Epstein Files specifically, but her broader point 100% and I’m dismayed that it seems we’re in the minority. Link follows.

Absolutely love @bendreyfuss idea to let dissatisfied Americans sell their citizenship to vetted bidders.

The only way it was EVER more equitable to ignore standardized tests was if you believe that quality of high school and written essays are LESS wealth-gameable than SAT. But that's nonsense.
In light of the UCSD report, it's fun reading this 2023 article urging everyone to follow the UC system's lead and eliminate standardized tests.

The paradox of progress is that this is true, while also on average most people will achieve more with aristocratic tutoring. But also this may be sheer numbers—not many historically had aristocratic tutoring.
I wonder how anyone would come to the conclusion that genius is explained by aristocratic tutoring when, if you read enough biographies, you quickly notice that almost no historical geniuses had aristocratic tutoring.

I feel this strongly. In my world this would be a full-court-press ad campaign with celebrity endorsements: if you’re only voting in one election, make it the primary. Don’t let the loonies pick the field.
@dylanmallman We’re voting lesser of two evils because we’re voting too late. The kind of sensible people who don’t swim in politics and are too busy to vote twice need to show up for primaries.

Yeah, seems high to me, too.
Asked ChatGPT to make intro quiz questions for 1st year Pol Sci class. And give answer. Got this gem: What proportion of members of Congress can name all three branches of government? · A. 20% · B. 40% · C. 60% · D. 75% Correct answer: B. About 40% GOTTA find source for that.

The moment when the press pool says Trent Crimm's tagline for him and he gives a wry smile is one of the hackiest things I've ever seen, and so disappointing given the art of the first season.

Working my way through Ted Lasso. Season 1 was dynamite. Season 2 is maybe finding its way back, but Season 2 Ep 1 was really disappointing. Spoilers next.
