I just muted anyone who doesn’t follow me. If you want to troll me on politics, you’re going to have to endure my opinions on DC traffic and the proper way to make pie.

Rereading Errol Morris' book on the Jeffrey MacDonald case and whether or not you think he's guilty, it's hard to argue he got a fair trial, or that there was enough evidence to convict him in a fair trial.

I grew up in a district that consisted of two far-flung neighborhoods connected by a narrow strip running down the west side highway.

I remember a district in Georgia that ran down I75 to neutralize a Republican area south of the city but this gerrymander is impressive. Again, Gerrymander was a Jeffersonian himself.

While that's what I voted on in 2024, it's pretty clear to me that's not how the overwhelming majority of people vote, and that this strategy decisively failed in 2024 for that reason.

Many of us are looking for a positive message from the left (the democrats in the US, the center left in Europe) to win the coming elections. My two cents: Make the next elections a choice between autocracy versus democracy. (Stay away from welfare state issues, from culture.

I'm less fussy about what's in the canon than about the fact that we need a canon. When I visit even elite colleges now, it strikes me that the kids have fewer and fewer common references. They don't recognize bible quotes, don't recognize Shakespeare, don't recognize Dickens . .

Anyway, my stance on Great Books education has moved from "it's nice if you can get it" to militant support. Just a matter of expanding the canon and establishing that the point isn't indoctrination, but building historical context and introducing the foundations of key concepts.

Went for a drive with my 80-year-old aunt yesterday to visit a cousin, and along the way got a fascinating cultural history of Boston's Irish neighborhoods. Get that family lore while you can, folks.
